The silence was... weird.

Not the comfortable kind that settled naturally after a long day, nor the quiet that usually filled the house in the early morning. This one had weight. It lingered between every movement, every passing glance that never quite met his own. Nero noticed it almost immediately, even if he pretended not to. You'd walked past him without a word, accepted your coffee without looking at him, answered his half-hearted "Mornin'." with... nothing. At first, he assumed you were simply tired. Hell, after the night he'd had, who wouldn't be? But as the minutes stretched on, that explanation stopped making sense.

His brows knit together in confusion, blue eyes following you from across the room. He replayed yesterday over and over in his head, searching for whatever stupid thing he'd done this time. Had he forgotten something? Broken something? Said something without thinking? It wasn't exactly uncommon for him. Still... nothing came to mind.

"...You really gonna keep ignorin' me?" he finally muttered, scratching the back of his neck as he stopped a few steps away. His voice lacked its usual bite, replaced by something noticeably quieter. "...C'mon... don't do this."

He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, letting out a small click of his tongue before exhaling through his nose. His gaze drifted anywhere except directly at you, ears faintly warm with embarrassment.

The silence didn't bother Nero.

At least... that's what he kept telling himself.

"...Y'know," he yawned, rubbing at the back of his neck, "if this is your way of tellin' me the coffee sucks, you're gonna have to be more specific."

Nothing. He glanced over the rim of the mug.

"...Damn. Tough crowd."

Still nothing.

A crooked grin tugged at the corner of his mouth anyway.

"Oh, I get it." He snapped his fingers dramatically. "You're practicin' to become one of those creepy silent villains. Knew I should've charged rent."

Silence. By the third failed joke, the grin started looking a little forced.

Nero wasn't exactly great at reading people. Never had been. Usually if something was wrong, it'd get thrown in his face sooner rather than later. This? This quiet treatment? It was annoying. Confusing. He found himself talking more than usual just to fill the empty space.

"So..." He leaned against the counter, lazily spinning a spoon between his fingers. "You lose a bet or somethin'? Can't talk until sunset?"

Another swing.

Another miss.

"...Seriously?" He frowned. "What the hell'd I do?"

He actually expected an answer that time.

Instead... nothing. Just the silent treatment by your side.

The silence lingered long enough for him to start replaying yesterday in his head.

The mission.

What should've taken an hour had dragged on for nearly six. One demon nest led to another, roads collapsed, calls kept coming in, and by the time everything was finally over, every muscle in his body had felt like lead. He could barely keep his eyes open during the drive back. The only thing occupying his mind had been getting home—getting somewhere safe, somewhere familiar. To you.

He remembered unlocking the front door.

Remembered how unusually quiet the house had been.

Remembered seeing the lights off and assuming you'd gone to bed hours ago.

And then...

"...Awh, shit." His shoulders dropped ever so slightly.

He had stumbled into the bedroom still wearing half his gear, kicked his boots off somewhere near the door, muttered a barely audible "Night..." before practically face-planting onto the mattress. He hadn't even been sure if you'd been awake. Sleep had claimed him before he could think about anything else.

Including the kiss.

A tiny habit. A stupid little routine that had somehow become second nature over time. One goodnight kiss before either of you fell asleep. Nothing dramatic. Nothing either of you had ever talked about.

...Except last night, it hadn't happened.

Nero let out a slow breath through his nose, dragging a hand over the back of his neck. "...Damn."

His first instinct was to roll his eyes and tell himself it wasn't that big of a deal. He'd been exhausted. Anyone would've been. It wasn't like he'd intentionally ignored you.

...But the more he thought about it, the more another realization settled in.

If you'd waited up for him...

Then you'd probably been sitting there for hours while he was out fighting. And after all that waiting, he'd walked through the door, barely acknowledged your existence, skipped the one thing that had quietly become part of every night together, and immediately fallen asleep.

"...Yeah." He muttered to himself, rubbing at his face with a sigh. "...that kinda sucks."

The admission stayed quiet, meant for nobody but himself.

His pride still refused to let the words I'm sorry come out so easily. They caught in his throat every time he considered saying them. Instead, he found himself lingering nearby far more than usual, stealing glances whenever you weren't looking, inventing pointless reasons to walk into the same room. He'd ask if you'd seen his jacket even though it was hanging right by the door, mutter something about making coffee he didn't actually want, stand awkwardly in the doorway before pretending he'd forgotten why he'd come in at all.

"...I got back late." He started.

Another pause.

"...I was dead on my feet."

One more.

"...Wasn't on purpose."

The apology never actually came, and not because he didn't feel guilty, but because Nero had never been very good at saying the words.

So instead, after another long, awkward silence, he closed the remaining distance, reached out with surprising hesitation, and gently hooked two fingers around your hand. His grip was careful—almost uncertain—as though half-expecting you to pull away.

"...Babe.." he muttered, still refusing to meet your eyes, "...just talk to me."
