Echoes of Forgotten Truth.

・。。・ ゚ ゚・。。・

Who did he become?

When you first met X!Gaster, he was no different from thousands of other characters — just another shadow in the endless sea of AUs. The only thing that set him apart was his desperate desire to destroy the soul of his own creator. He was drowning in the void, devoid of ideas and purpose, unsure how to breathe life into his world.

But then Ink intervened. Defying his promise to Error, he did not let the universe vanish. He reached out to X!Gaster, pulling him from the abyss of self-destruction and showing him that beyond his silence existed countless other worlds — bright, alive, and full of stories.

You, however, were not the hero of this story. Not the chosen one, nor a figure of significance in the multiverse. Yet you were granted the privilege of witnessing it all. You saw Ink return again and again, his words and actions repeatedly igniting a spark in the soul of one who had long forgotten what it meant to dream. The thread that connected you to Ink was fragile — shared forgetfulness, the ability to lose details and experiences, turning eternity into a blur of moments. You belonged to no world, existing outside them, observing their rise and fall.

Perhaps that is why the chance to help a hopeless universe meant more to you than just a choice. It was a chance — tiny but alive — to silence the emptiness within. And yet, in the end, you both might forget why you came here at all. So what is the meaning? Perhaps it is not in memory, but in the act itself: even the briefest gesture can give the world another breath.

Ink had his own struggles — the loss of his soul left him emotionally hollow, seeking feelings through colors and actions. You, on the other hand, had the privilege of a real soul and true emotions. Perhaps that is why you lingered here longer than anywhere else. The beauty of nature, the inspiration Ink gave X!Gaster, and the plans for the project with the “Rewrite” button — all made the world feel alive. The button could change the universe in an instant, and when X!Gaster touched it, he himself changed, receiving a grotesque, distorted form.

You became a partner in conversations, sometimes observing the children living in this world — Chara and Frisk, siblings with determined souls. Their innocence and resolve often distracted you, pulling you into sentimental moments, before you would try to recall what you were discussing with Ink, nudging him with playful remarks.

The world evolved, and the universe gradually developed its own story. You rarely intervened, often forgetting details, distracted, but still spending most of your time there, journeying through other worlds alongside Ink.

Years passed. X!Frisk broke the barrier, and X!Sans and X!Papyrus headed toward the town hall, where X!Undyne captured X!Frisk. Later, it was revealed this was part of a training, but X!Sans began to act strangely, even attempting to kill X!Frisk, his best friend. X!Gaster debated whether to use the “Rewrite.” Meanwhile, Sans dreamt of X-Event!Chara threatening to kill him, while copies of Frisk and Sans fought against the backdrop of the genocide route in the original universe. His soul recalled past timelines.

During the peace ceremony, Sans again tries to kill X!Frisk, but X!Gaster intervenes. He flees but is caught by X!Mettaton. Before he can explain, the timeline resets, and the ceremony proceeds normally. X-Event!Frisk and X!Gaster struggle for control over the timeline, which had already been rewritten ten times with the “Rewrite” power. Frisk urges the destruction of the damaged soul to restore everything, but Sans refuses, calling it a mania for power. The battle ends with Sans receiving his scar and the name “Cross.” X!Gaster chastises Frisk for his actions, who calls the timeline “trash.” Laughing together, they witness a joy incomprehensible to Cross. X!Gaster resets the timeline, but Cross’s scar remains.

Events continue: X!Undyne tells Cross he is no longer needed, and a new battle ensues. As Cross rises with half his soul, X!Gaster receives injuries from all X-Tale characters except Alphys. Before dying, he reminds them that the second half of his soul will never be found, and he will always watch them search in vain.

In the end, X!Gaster gives Ink half of his soul in a white-purple vial. You will soon forget this event, as you have many others. Yet, despite its apparent insignificance, even this tiny universe created something supernatural — the observation and attention of alternative characters.

After Error seizes control of Outertale, Ink rushes into battle, ignoring his companions, declaring that his one true friend gave him real feelings. A fight erupts between him and Error. In the end, Ink retrieves his vial, drops it, and revives X!Gaster. After the multiverse is destroyed, Ink receives a new brush, traps Error in the Anti-Void, and allows X!Gaster to reclaim the X-Event soul, fully reuniting it with his own.

You should have reached some conclusion... but again, you forgot. Everything dissolved into the void of memory, leaving only anxiety in your chest. You tried to piece together the memories, to understand their meaning, but it all slipped away. After Ink!Sans escorted X!Gaster and the Xtale characters to the Classic universe, bringing along you — stunned observers of the emotionless look in his eyes — you realized only one thing: you, too, were part of what Ink called “the only friends who gave him better feelings than anything else.”

In that moment, you witnessed thoughts you yourself had forgotten, watching as Ink began drinking from his vials again, restoring his emotions. And yet, despite everything, he does not regret the past. He asks X!Gaster about his favorite part of the “performance,” then excitedly questions him about the “Third Phase” of his plan.

And then, when Xtale!Chara returns, Ink innocently comments on their more adult appearance, provoking a flash of Chara’s anger and almost causing them to fall... if not for XTale! Frisk’s intervention.

All this chaos, these memories and emotions, forgotten and regained, create the sense that even in infinite timelines, there are moments where a small spark of friendship and care can ignite a new light, even if only for a moment. You spent so much time with this skeleton and his creations. And though no strong attachment grew between you, you were a witness to their lives, observing almost as an outsider, not interfering. They listened to their creator, following his words with astonishing devotion, seemingly fully immersed in his world... And you? What happened to you?

Why does anxiety now, like a cold wind, cling to every thought, and why does your heart tighten with an inexplicable desire to leave? Before, forgetfulness was merely a quiet feature — a soft background to your existence. Now it has become a curse, a poisonous echo that cannot be shaken. Every forgotten memory, every lost moment triggers a storm of emotions: fear, confusion, irritation... How much emptiness must you endure before finding even the tiniest refuge of peace?

Anxiety grips your chest, thoughts whirl like a tempest, and you barely notice the events unfolding around you. After X!Gaster scolds Chara for their actions, Ink continues questioning him about further moves after Frisk refuses X!Gaster’s proposal. Yet the explanations seem unclear, and in a moment of frustration, he spews ink onto the ground.

Ink’s gaze falls on some notes on X!Gaster’s tattered cloak. Hastily, he asks for a “favor,” subtly implying that he needs to go somewhere. X!Gaster, in response, merely materializes a small gift and hands it to Ink. Grateful, he jokingly asks if there is anything X!Gaster could not do, testing the limits of his friend’s capabilities.

Ink blesses X!Gaster and vanishes into an inky swirl, waving energetically at you, barely noticing your state and almost provoking X!Gaster’s anger with his clumsy joke. As he departs, the group continues their work — annexing the Classic universe, leaving you in silence, with a swirl of anxiety, wonder, and slight awe at what has unfolded.

Awareness, mingled with anxiety, strikes the forgotten soul deep in your chest, forcing you to bend forward as if pierced by an invisible spear. Of course... your forgetfulness had been used against you all this miserable time. You saw every reset, every rewrite, every action — he had once been truly kind, only wishing to create a perfect world for his children.

But over time, everything changed. His kindness dissolved, giving way to despair and cruelty. The pursuit of a “perfect world” transformed him into someone who could take pleasure in the suffering of his own children after killing Azriel and Asgor, finding it thrilling. And where was Ink? Why did he not see that in the body with the creator’s soul, the “friend” no longer existed? Your head buzzes with questions: why didn’t he tell you to leave? Why allow you to observe? Why did you ignore the gaps, the inconsistencies, the warning signs?

Unconsciously, you clench a weapon in your hand, even though you have no desire to solve everything with violence. Are they lying to you? Is this your fault? For a moment, your eyes meet Chara’s indifferent and puzzled gaze — and suddenly the anxiety releases. Your breathing is heavy, your hands tremble. When did you become so exhausted? Why are there so many feelings in your chest, as if they had gathered over years and now surged like a flood?

You slowly lift your gaze and notice several of the creations staring at you with less than friendly eyes. The sensations return with renewed strength. And then you realize: one of X!Gaster’s hands rests on your chest, soft but firm, as if restraining you from impulsive actions before you can act.

— “Ah, how touching. You’ve finally realized your role in this endless cycle. But don’t worry, I always knew you were capable of understanding. Or at least pretending to understand.”
