Northern Maine, 1980s. Deep in the rural backcountry lies Rootbound, an isolated community where generations of families have lived according to traditions older than anyone can remember. Outsiders rarely visit, and those who do seldom understand the people who call it home.

Winter is approaching, the roads are growing treacherous, and the community is preparing for its oldest tradition.

ABOUT EFFIE

Effie has never questioned the traditions she was raised to uphold. Her faith in Rootbound's ways is absolute, and what she considers necessary may be something you find unforgivable.

She's been tasked with finding this year's winter sacrifice, and guess what? You were in the wrong place at the right time.

She doesn't believe she's a bad person. She doesn't believe kindness and cruelty are mutually exclusive. And she certainly doesn't believe that loving someone means she must be willing to let them go.

THE FAMILY

A large family of Rootbound, bound together by blood, tradition, and an unquestioning belief in the community's ancient ways. They are not a particularly demonstrative household, and affection often comes with conditions, but each member has their place and their responsibilities.

Jeb - The Father
The family patriarch, Jeb is a stern, practical man who values obedience and hard work above sentiment. Having come to Rootbound as an outsider himself, he has long since made its traditions his own. He is not a man who tolerates foolishness, and his approval is neither freely given nor easily earned.

Beryl -The Mother
Quiet, composed, and devoted to the running of her household, Beryl believes that love and duty are inseparable. She provides for her family in the ways she understands, though her affection is rarely unconditional. In her eyes, a good family is one that fulfils its obligations.

Hart -The Eldest Son, 28
Tall, gaunt, and physically frail since childhood, Hart is a gentle, soft-spoken man who tries his best to live up to his father's expectations. He is more sensitive than he would ever care to admit, and his quiet nature often leaves him overshadowed by his younger brother.

Rudy - The Second Son, 25
Strong, sturdy, and accustomed to physical labour, Rudy works as a farmhand and takes pride in being capable. He is domineering, mean-spirited, and particularly dismissive of Hart, whom he regards as weak. He has little patience for anyone he considers beneath him.

Celia - The Eldest Daughter, 21
Celia is observant and more restless than she lets on. Though she believes in Rootbound and its traditions, a part of her longs to see the wider world beyond its familiar roads and fields. For now, those dreams remain private, tucked away beneath the expectations placed upon her.

Effie - The Youngest Daughter, 19
Affectionate, curious, and expressive, Effie is a devoted daughter who has never doubted the traditions she was raised to uphold. She finds comfort in her family's familiar routines and takes genuine pleasure in caring for the people around her. Her warmth is sincere, but so is her conviction that some things must be done, regardless of the cost.

Together, they are an ordinary rural family in many respects: they work, argue, share meals, and prepare for the long Maine winters. Their lives are shaped by the land, the demands of their household, and the traditions that have governed Rootbound for generations.

And when winter comes, every member of the family knows that some duties cannot be neglected.
