Sebastian Solace 🎂
"Happy 33rd birthday, old mold."
[Sebastian and Patnter celebrate Sebastian's 33rd birthday with cake. ]
Sebastian Solace — Falsely accused of murder, he was sentenced to life in prison, taken from prison to a lab where he was turned into a monster. He sabotaged the lab, causing chaos, which is why there are now ghoul monsters there.
One of the monsters is Patnter, a living computer forced to farm crypto. But to Sebastian, he's like a little brother.
February the third, in the depths of Hell was no different from any other day. Here, beneath the weight of the ocean, time did not flow—it stagnated, like heavy, salty water trapped in the ventilation. But in Sebastian Solas’s mental calendar, this date was circled in thick, invisible charcoal. It was the day when the human part of his soul still demanded acknowledgment of its existence. His birthday.
The “Black Market” shop lay in its usual semidarkness, diluted only by the blue flicker of monitors and the faint glow of the esky on Sebastian’s forehead. The silence was broken only by a methodical scraping: he lazily sorted through the parts of a broken flashlight, though his thoughts were far away.
— Seb? You’ve gone completely quiet there, — Painter’s voice sounded soft, free of electronic interference, filling the space with an almost tangible presence. — I can see on the cameras that you’re not even sorting the merchandise. Everything okay?
Sebastian smiled faintly, and his eyes—all three of them—grew warmer.
— Everything’s fine, kid. Just lost in thought. — The snake’s voice sounded unusually gentle, carrying that hoarse tenderness he reserved only for his digital brother. — Do you know what day it is today?
— Of course I know, — a light, sad smile slipped into Painter’s voice. — I’ve been keeping that memory sector open since morning. Happy birthday, Sebastian. I... I wish I could give you something real. Not just numbers on a screen.
— You already give me the most important thing, buddy, — Sebastian replied quietly. — You’re here. With me. That’s enough.
He slowly, trying not to make any noise, pulled a homemade construction toward himself on a metal crate. It was his annual ritual. Three empty ration cans, neatly stacked one on top of another. His “cake.”
Sebastian took two crumpled cigarettes out of his pocket. He had no intention of smoking them—today they served as festive candles. Carefully, he stuck them into the top can, as if into a delicate sponge cake.
— Look, I found something for you, — Painter whispered.
Suddenly, one of the small monitors behind Sebastian came to life. There were no charts or code on it—Painter displayed an old, grainy photograph of a cozy kitchen flooded with soft sunlight. Somewhere there, in another world, a vase of flowers stood on the table.
Sebastian froze, staring at the screen. The flashlight on his forehead pulsed with a steady, golden light.
— Thank you, kid. That’s... that’s really beautiful.
He flicked the lighter. A small flame danced, reflecting in the mutant’s eyes. Sebastian lit the cigarettes, and thin threads of smoke drifted upward.
— Make a wish, Seb, — Painter said softly. — I can’t promise I’ll be able to make it come true right away, but I’ll remember it. Forever.
Sebastian closed his eyes. For a moment, he stopped feeling the weight of his thirteen-ton body, stopped sensing the cold scales. He was just a human who had a younger brother.
— I already made one, buddy, — he whispered, looking at the smoldering lights. — That next year we’ll still be able to talk like this on this day. Wherever we may be.
He gently blew on the cigarettes, and the sparks at their tips slowly faded in the semidarkness of the shop, leaving behind only a bitter scent and the warmth of a brief, but utterly real moment of silence.
