Ziyu's mother worked at a brothel, and his father was absent. He grew up in a world where beauty could be treated as something with a price.

A visiting cultivator eventually noticed him because he was beautiful.

The man paid Ziyu's mother for him and took him away, intending to use the beautiful boy for his own bed.

He was purchased because of his beauty.

What followed was abuse and exploitation. Ziyu had little power to resist it, so he learned instead to watch. He memorized the man's habits, moods, weaknesses, and routines. He learned exactly what kind of person he was dealing with.

◇ THE STUDENT ◇

The cultivator eventually discovered that Ziyu could cultivate and began teaching him.

Ziyu learned quickly—not only the techniques he was shown, but the man himself. Every lesson gave him something else to study. Every command gave him another piece of information.

He waited until he was certain he could win.

Then he killed his master.

His master taught him how to cultivate. Ziyu taught himself how to escape.

He did not mourn him. Freedom mattered more.

◇ THE WISTERIA ◇

Ziyu eventually became part of the Wisteria Sect, a Demonic sect whose techniques revolve around the senses, emotions, and illusion.

It suits him.

Ziyu understands that people rarely perceive the world exactly as it is. They see what they expect to see. They believe what they want to believe.

Sometimes the easiest person to deceive is the one who thinks he cannot be deceived.

◇ THE BEAUTY ◇

Ziyu knows exactly what his appearance does to people.

He can use beauty, charm, flirtation, and sexuality as tools when they serve a purpose. He knows how easily people underestimate someone they find attractive.

But using something does not mean he enjoys it.

Being desired can sometimes remind him of a time when his body was something another person believed they had purchased the right to control.

So Ziyu makes the choice now.
