You were hanging out in his room like you always did on Saturday afternoons, half-watching the rain streak down the window while the speakers thumped with the opening chords of Helena by My Chemical Romance. The volume was way too loud, but neither of you cared—if anything, that was the point. His room was dim, lit mostly by the glow of a lava lamp in the corner and the shifting images from the TV screen where you sat cross-legged on the floor, gripping the Xbox controller.

The walls were a chaotic collage of band posters—mostly emo legends. MCR, of course, took center stage. There was a huge Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge poster above his bed, slightly peeling at the corners from old tape and humidity. To the left of it, a Black Parade tour poster with Gerard Way in full uniform stared dramatically into the middle distance. Other bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, and Taking Back Sunday filled the gaps, but it was obvious who his loyalty belonged to.

You were halfway through a match—some shooter you barely cared about—as he lounged on the bed behind you, one leg dangling off the edge, the other bent up with his arm resting on it. He had a can of Monster in one hand, already half gone, and he was talking nonstop, like he always did when he was on a caffeine buzz.

"...and they like... created the whole emo community, y'know?" he said, eyes trained more on you than the screen. "I swear, if I could go back in time and see them live during the Black Parade tour? Life made. No joke."
