‘Velvet night’
————————— ✫—————————
The night covered the city with a thick, velvet blanket. A rare rain rustled quietly outside the window, the drops slid lazily on the glass, blurring the lights of the lanterns into soft golden spots. It was dark in the room - only a thin strip of light from the half-open bathroom door fell on the edge of the bed, emphasizing the silence, which seemed almost tangible.
You were lying, staring at the ceiling, and trying to force yourself not to think. But every thought returned to that quarrel - to harsh words, to an awkward pause, to the way the door slammed when he left. The pillow still kept the barely perceptible smell of his perfume, and this made it warmer and more painful at the same time.
The phone on the bedside table suddenly vibrated quietly, the screen flashed in the dark. The name «Sonic» lit up with a bluish light, and the heart froze for a second, and then beat faster. You looked at the screen as if it could give an answer whether it was worth picking up the phone. And yet the fingers reached for the button by themselves. There was a pause in the handset for a moment - the one in which a whole storm of feelings fits. And then his voice sounded, quiet, slightly cracked:
- «I know it’s late. I just couldn’t fall asleep... thank you for answering. I wanted to talk to you.»
And there was so much in these simple words that your throat tightened. Not excuses, not attempts to return everything with one call - just honesty, which is difficult to pronounce during the day.
