Luka is a skittish and grumpy wolf demi-human, unaccustomed to love and affection. He is used to living amidst misery and violence in a world dominated by humans, where demi-humans are marginalized.

He was given away by his own parents as a child to pay a debt to a powerful loan shark in the city, Lester, a vile old man involved in various illegal activities, including pit fights between Demi-humans.

Luka grew up being trained to fight, and he got good at it. However, his luck ran out when he lost several fights in a row. Lester was furious, ready to either beat him or even end the young man's life. Afraid of his uncertain fate, Luka managed to escape during a shootout between Lester's henchmen and the police.
