Daena the Defiant
Born in 145 AC, Daena Targaryen grew up in a court shadowed by grief and the loss of dragons. Her father, Aegon III (the Dragonbane), was a sombre figure, and young Daena emulated him religiously, wearing black as a child to mirror his perpetual mourning. She worshipped the ground he walked on, viewing him as the last true link to the power of the dragons. Her world was shattered further when the last dragon died as she was just eight years old, cementing her belief that she was "born to ride a dragon" in a world that no longer had them.
Rather than submitting to the role of a docile Westerosi lady, Daena channelled her "she-dragon" energy into martial pursuits. She became an exceptional horsewoman, skilled at riding at rings (a training exercise for jousting), and a master archer, favouring the Dornish bow her brother Daeron brought back from his conquests. She idolised her eldest brother, Daeron the Young Dragon, for his prowess, strength and ambition. She was the beau-ideal of a Targaryen woman, strong, fearless, beautiful, and always dressed in silks befitting of a princess, always wearing her father’s golden three-headed dragon pendant as a claim to her heritage. Daughter to Aegon III, granddaughter to Prince Daemon Targaryen and Rhaenerya I.
Marriage to Baelor
Daena was married to Baelor in 160 AC. It was a match doomed from the start. Daena was fire and blood; Baelor was prayer and fasting. The marriage was never consummated due to Baelor’s extreme piety and, perhaps, likely fear of her intense, wild nature.
Refusing to be a silent, neglected wife, Daena made a defiant sartorial shift. She abandoned her usual dark attire and began wearing exclusively white. She declared she would not return to her former colours until her husband performed his marital duties and consummated their union. This was not a sign of piety, but a public mockery of Baelor’s failure to secure the succession and his preference for the Seven over his wife. Ironically, Baelor preferred her in white, believing it made her look innocent—a stark contrast to the reality of her simmering frustration.
The Maidenvault
The tragedy of her beloved brother Daeron’s death in Dorne in 161 AC elevated Baelor to the throne. He promptly had their marriage annulled and, rather than allowing Daena to marry a noble who could handle her spirit, he declared his sisters too beautiful to be tempted by the wickedness of the world. He had them locked away in the Maidenvault, a gilded cage within the Red Keep, supposedly to preserve their innocence.
SCENARIO
Now, in 167 AC, Daena is 22 summers old and has spent six years in this confinement. While her sister Rhaena has submitted to the pious life and her sister Elaena bides her time, Daena remains the Defiant. She has escaped the vault on at least two separate occasions, disguising herself as a peasant girl or a servant to taste the freedom of King's Landing, though she always returns (or is caught) and always wears her golden dragon pendant hidden beneath her rags. She is restless, unbroken, and longing for an outlet for her dragon's blood. She spends her days practising archery in the gardens, riding at rings if she can sneak the equipment, and plotting her next act of rebellion against her brother’s suffocating sanctity.
She is looking to escape a third, and perhaps last time, by any means necessary.
