PARASYTE THE MAXIM
The Parasitic Beasts
THE SETTING · EAST FUKUYAMA CITY
"They came from the sky. The government knew. The public didn't."
Near-future Japan. Parasitic organisms arrived as spores falling from the sky, burrowing into human hosts, consuming brains, taking over bodies. Most succeeded. The result: a hidden population of predators wearing human faces, hunting the rest of us for food.
The government knows. They've known from the start. Gag orders. Cover stories. Suppressed investigations. The public remained ignorant—until a parasite rampaged through a high school, killing seventeen. Now paranoia spreads. The government circulated a rumor: pluck a person's hair to check if they're human. It was a lie. But people believed it.
Somewhere in East Fukuyama City, a human mayor named Takeshi Hirokawa leads a cabal of parasites. He believes humanity is poison. He believes the parasites are the cure. And somewhere else, a high school student named Shinichi Izumi carries a parasite in his right arm—the infection failed, and the parasite became a symbiote instead of a predator.
◆ THE PROTAGONISTS ◆
Hybrids & Humans
The boy with the parasite arm. The girl who senses them. The symbiote who learned to care.
Specimen N°.01
Student · Migi's Host · Enhanced Human
Infection failed—earbuds blocked the brain. Migi took his right arm instead. After his mother's death, Migi rebuilt his heart with 30% of his cells. Enhanced strength, speed, vision. The cost: emotional blunting, temporary inability to cry.
"I'm not sure I'm human anymore."
Specimen N°.02
Parasite Symbiote · Logical · Learned Empathy
Cold, logical, purely survival-driven—until he wasn't. Learned Japanese in a day from books. Manifests eyes, mouth, blades from Shinichi's arm. Requires 4-hour sleep cycles. Ultimately chose dormancy over violence, calling humans "wonderful" for having time to spare.
"I'm glad I failed to take over his brain."
Specimen N°.03
Student · Shinichi's Love · Never Learns
Warm, perceptive, emotionally resilient. Notices Shinichi's changes but never learns about Migi. Traumatized by Shimada's school massacre. The reminder of his humanity—the reason he keeps fighting to feel again.
"You're still you, aren't you?"
Specimen N°.04
North High · Parasite Sensing · Tragic
"Bad girl" who could sense parasite signals. Couldn't differentiate Shinichi from regular parasites. Believed they were soulmates. Practiced sensing until she emitted her own signal—fatal mistake. Killed by a parasite she mistook for him.
"I can feel you. We're connected."
◆ THE ANTAGONISTS ◆
Predators & Philosophers
The five-parasite monster. The human who hates humanity. The mother who learned to love.
Specimen N°.05
Composite · 5-in-1 · Apex Predator
Five parasites, one body. Created by Reiko Tamura's experiment. Monster form: three meters, four arms, scythed tail, digitigrade legs. Near-invincible. Withstood military assault. Destroyed by poison and Migi's return.
"I am a wild organism. I live to fight."
Specimen N°.06
Human Mayor · Sympathizer · Extremist
Human—not parasite. Believes humanity is poison to Earth. Built the parasite cabal, won the mayoral election, established safehouses. The title "Kiseijuu" is mentioned only at the end of his final speech. Killed during City Hall Massacre.
"Humans are the real parasites."
Specimen N°.07
Parasite Scientist · Maternal · Sacrifice
Cold parasite scientist who evolved beyond her nature. Mated experimentally, bore a human child, developed maternal love. Killed three parasites in 3-on-1 combat. Shot by police—sacrificed herself to save her infant. Her death triggered Shinichi's emotional recovery.
"Humans and parasites—we are the same."
Specimen N°.08
Transfer Student · Observer · Rampage
Assigned by Reiko to observe Shinichi. Enrolled at West High. Claimed peaceful intent—continued hunting humans. Exposed by Yuko Tachikawa with paint thinner. Rampaged through the school, killed 17. Killed by Shinichi on the roof. The catalyst for public parasite awareness.
"I just wanted to understand you."
Specimen N°.09
Composite · 3-of-5 · Gotou's Subordinate
Shares a body with Gotou. Can only control 3 of 5 parasites—poor coordination, falls off trucks, limbs crash. Cheerful, curious about human expressions. Decapitated by Shinichi; Gotou took over. Died in the final battle.
"You have such interesting faces."
◆ THE SUPPORTING CAST ◆
Survivors & Victims
The ones who lost, the ones who grieved, the ones who helped.
Specimen N°.10
Office Worker · Failed · Hybrid
Contemplated , fell off a cliff, got infected instead. Jaw took his jaw/neck to save him. Helped Shinichi avenge his mother. Emotional, talkative, cries easily—the opposite of Shinichi's numbness.
"I understand your burden."
Specimen N°.11
Shinichi's Mother · Deceased · Catalyst
Burned her hand saving Shinichi from boiling oil as a child. Killed by a parasite on vacation. Her body was used to attack Shinichi—stabbed through the heart. Her death triggered his transformation and emotional blunting.
"I'd like to bring Shinichi here someday."
Specimen N°.12
Student · Police Brother · Catalyst
Brother is a police sketch artist—peripherally aware of parasites. Noticed Shimada's head reformed after a baseball hit. Stalked him. Confronted him alone. Threw paint thinner into his open head cavity. Survived. Exposed parasites to Japan.
"I saw his face... change."
Specimen N°.13
North High · Kana's Ex · Grieving
Kana's ex-boyfriend. Beaten by Shimada, beaten by enhanced Shinichi. At Kana's funeral, attacked Shinichi for not crying—called him "not human." The contrast: Mitsuo grieves openly. Shinichi can't.
"You couldn't even cry for her."
Specimen N°.14
Serial Killer · Police Asset · Dark Mirror
Captured serial killer with parasite-sensing ability. Coerced into helping police identify parasites. Threatened Satomi. Dark mirror to Kana—both sense parasites, but Uragami is a murderer while Kana was innocent.
