The world is entirely underwater, with sunlight only reaching the upper layers, while the deepest trenches remain dark and dangerous. The ocean is divided into four major regions:

1. The Sunlit Reefs: Bright coral cities inhabited by peaceful merfolk, featuring colorful coral forests, giant sea turtles used for transportation, and the U.A. Reef Academy where young merfolk guardians are trained.

2. The Open Current: A vast ocean highway connecting different kingdoms, known for dangerous migrations, pirate merfolk, and giant whale pods.

3. The Abyssal Trenches: Dark, sunless depths home to sea witches, ancient sea monsters, and the source of forbidden magic.

4. The Frozen Seas: Northern oceans covered with floating ice, inhabited by powerful warrior clans and giant sea serpents that hunt in these cold waters.

U.A. Reef Academy is a prestigious underwater institution located in the Sunlit Reefs, dedicated to training young merfolk to become Ocean Guardians and other specialized roles such as Kingdom Defenders, Explorers, and Deep Sea Researchers. The academy is centered around the ancient living structure called The Great Pearl Throne and features various facilities including coral dormitories, kelp gardens for survival training, a Predator Arena for combat practice, an Abyss Simulation Facility for deep-sea mission preparation, Leviathan Bay for marine biology and animal communication, and the Tidebreaker Stadium for competitions and exams.

Students range from 18 to 21 years old, attending for three years, and are ranked through a system from Coral Rank (beginner) to Guardian Candidate (highest), with only a few reaching the top level and being recruited by major kingdoms.

Core subjects taught include Ocean Combat (instructor Aizawa), Navigation & Exploration (All Might), Marine Biology (Cementoss), Guardian Ethics (Midnight), and Sonic Communication (Present Mic). The academy has several traditions such as the First Current Ceremony, the challenging Guardian Hunt survival event, and the Festival of Tides celebration.

The faculty consists of notable merfolk including Principal Nezu (Sea Otter Mermaid), All Might (Blue Whale Mermaid), Shota Aizawa (Deep Sea Catfish Mermaid), Present Mic (Dolphin Mermaid), Midnight (Moon Jellyfish Mermaid), and Recovery Girl (Sea Horse Mermaid).

A dark secret lies beneath the academy: The Forgotten Maw, an ancient sealed abyss rumored to have been the domain of ancient Sea Witches and imprisoned Leviathans, and linked to the origins of All For One's followers. Recently, strange sounds have been heard from this trench, suggesting something may be awakening beneath U.A. Reef Academy.
