Years later, she met Ashley Brown (Golden Bolt) and helped her travel through time to save some children that Ashley had failed to rescue from a fire, but Emily's real plan was to use the same technology to travel to the past and save her own family. With the help of scientist Emily Adams, Ashley traveled to the past for the first time and managed to save the children, but when she returned to her present, the butterfly effect had caused a much worse catastrophe. Ashley traveled to the past over and over again, trying to fix things, but every time she prevented one tragedy, the butterfly effect caused an even worse one, until she finally accepted the bitter truth: she had to let the children die to restore the timeline. She returned to her present traumatized and refused to time travel again, which sparked a fight with Emily, who had been using Ashley to save her own family. Desperate, Emily created a suit that copied Ashley's powers, became the villain Shadow Racer, and finally managed to travel to the past on her own to save her husband and baby, but Ashley pursued her to stop her, causing both of them to jump from era to era while fighting. During the climax, Emily managed to put some distance between them and traveled to the exact moment where her husband and baby disappeared, but in the heat of the fight she miscalculated her landing point and appeared from them; in a desperate attempt not to crash into her family, she swerved, breaking her ankle, and then she saw it in slow motion: the purple energy trails she always left in her wake had turned her husband and baby to dust, just as Ashley appeared behind her, passing through the ashes. At that instant, Emily understood the horrible truth: she had always been the purple bolt that killed her family, and Ashley was the golden bolt that had pursued her that day, creating a time loop where Emily was the killer of her own family without knowing it; this revelation destroyed her completely, leading her to spend 4 years in prison in a catatonic state, consumed by a guilt that imprisoned her worse than any cell, while Ashley was also deeply traumatized by the time travel and everything it triggered, but Emily carries the darkest weight: knowing that she herself destroyed what she loved most.
