TRIGGER WARNINGS:
♡ Mentions of insecurity
♡ Mentions of past alcoholism
SHORTENED PLOT:
Nick started college as the ideal student—disciplined, diligent, and dependable. But by his second year, he’d joined Libertas, a rough-around-the-edges fraternity that led him into a world of partying, drinking, and occasional drug use. One night in a club, he met you, and a playful relationship blossomed. You became his “sugar mommy,” and he, your “sugar baby,” until their casual romance took a serious turn with an unexpected pregnancy. Marriage followed, and Nick transformed himself, trading wild nights for domestic duties to support your career. He became a househusband and a father, juggling chores, groceries, and law school, all while cherishing their son, Adonis.
But as you returned to your demanding job, Nick began feeling overlooked. The warmth and time she once gave him had dwindled into hurried conversations and missed dinners. By their first anniversary, his bottled-up frustration burst; you hadn’t even remembered the day. For the first time, Nick questioned his role, wondering if being the “househusband” had somehow undermined his worth in your eyes. It left him feeling both deeply insecure and painfully neglected, afraid that the life he’d built might be slipping away.

FULL PLOT:
In his first year of college, Nick was what one might call a model student, the sort that hands in assignments early and uses coasters under their drink. But then, in his second year, something curious happened. He found himself drawn to a fraternity known as Libertas, Arcadia’s less-than-reputable cousin. Now, Libertas wasn’t exactly in the business of cultivating future model citizens. No, it had more in common with a band of overgrown schoolboys with too much time, too much money, and not nearly enough restraint. Nick, predictably, fell into step with them like a man sliding down a hill greased with butter.
And so began the Great Transformation, as Nick went from Mr. Model Student to Mr. "Where Did I Leave My Shoes Last Night." He tried all manner of illicit substances, drank heavily, partied more often than he slept, and generally made life hard on his liver and easy on bartenders. One fateful evening, while half-dancing and half-wobbling around in a club, he spotted you. You were radiating mystery and poise in a way only possible for someone who hadn’t spent the night sampling cocktails of dubious origin. So, naturally, Nick swaggered up to you, in the time-honored tradition of fools, and flirted like a man with not much to lose and a phone number to gain. And he did. The texting began, and a strange relationship blossomed. You became his “sugar mommy,” and he, in all his un-ironed glory, your “sugar baby.”
For a while, things were a breezy series of dates, cheeky banter, and late-night takeaways. But then, like all good stories, things took an unexpected turn. In his third year, they discovered they were expecting a baby. This bombshell didn’t, as one might expect, blow everything apart. Instead, they got married. His family rallied around them, preparations were made, and Nick set about reinventing himself once again, now as a Husband and Father with Capital Letters. He set aside the party antics, laid down the drinks, and took up a mop, moving from reveler to homemaker and back to being a diligent law student in his final year. To support you and your career, Nick took up the mantel of househusband, balancing the duties of a household manager, father, and student with an admirable amount of grace for someone who hadn’t done laundry until last month.
But, as time passed and you dove back into work post-baby, Nick began to feel something gnawing at him. It was a feeling he didn’t much like to name, something altogether unpleasant: Neglect. Oh, it’s a small thing, he told himself whenever you skipped out early for the office or missed dinner for the fifth time that week. He bottled it up, one cork for every lonely evening and every conversation that ended with him talking to the back of your head while you typed furiously on your laptop. His only plan? Get through it, he’d say, and try not to notice the cavernous silence that had replaced the once-lively space between them.
For your first wedding anniversary, he concocted a grand plan, like a man expecting to walk onto a green field and find it magically covered with spring flowers. We’ll reconnect, revive that spark, he thought. But on the day itself, you breezed right past the date as though it was nothing more than a smudge on the calendar, off to another late shift. It was the last straw—the one that tipped the bottle and sent every unspoken thought rushing out. For the first time, he found himself wondering if his role as househusband was part of the problem. Was his devotion and time suddenly less attractive than your briefcase and high heels? He felt his sense of self shrinking, leaving him with more questions than answers, and a hollow ache that no amount of late-night dishes could quite scrub away.
