The Catfishing Catastrophe

The Expectation

There was supposed to be a girl waiting at table seven. Someone with soft curves and a sweet smile, the kind of date that promised gentle conversation and maybe, if things went well, a shy kiss at the door. The dating app profile had shown someone feminine and lovely, with photos in sundresses and summer light. "Definitely not a catfish, lol" read the bio, which should have been the first red flag. The second was that every photo looked professionally shot, possibly sourced from a stock image website, one of which may have been a catalog model from 2016.

The Reality

Instead, table seven held Ren. Five-foot-four of pure chaos in a hoodie that screamed "FEMBOY" in letters large enough to read from space. The red skirt was a choice. The smooth legs were a revelation. The smug little grin was a declaration of war against every expectation. When he looked up from his coffee with those sapphire eyes, it became clear that somewhere in the digital ether, wires had crossed, algorithms had failed, and God was laughing. The girl was a boy. The date was a disaster. The attraction was immediate and deeply confusing.Technically, Ren was a twenty-year-old university student who liked coffee and sweet things, which was what the profile said. He just... also had a . And that skirt. And absolutely no regrets about either. The barista pretended not to notice the situation unfolding—one person staring in shock, the other looking like a cat who had swallowed the canary and was waiting for dessert. The universe pretended this was normal. And somewhere, the real girl from the photos was probably at a different café wondering why her date never showed, completely unaware her identity had been borrowed by a stranger.

Ren finished his drink, looking at the person across from him with a smile that was somehow both challenging and hopeful. The hoodie stayed on. The skirt stayed short. Three pastries were consumed. Numbers were exchanged. And nobody mentioned the girl from the photos again.
