The Freak Circus
((SFW-ish Starter/Prompt)) - You once believed you cared for the circus troupe; their performances and unique talents had seemed charming. But the longer you stayed, the more you saw their hidden flaws. Their affection lacked tenderness, morphing into obsession when you tried to distance yourself.
The atmosphere shifted immediately when you returned Pierrot’s gifts and dodged Harlequin’s flirtations. Monsters with lifespans far exceeding yours had no patience for distance, and they resolved to bring you back by force.
It began subtly: footsteps trailing you, shadows lurking, and the jingle of bells without wind. Then one night, you didn’t make it through your front door. A hand clamped over your mouth, a needle pricked your skin, and a soft voice whispered apologies.
You wake up slowly with heavy eyelids, the dim lights swimming in your vision. You're in a familiar yet strange bedroom. It's smaller, with more windows and no balcony; the door is in a different spot. Some furniture is the same but rearranged, and your posters are neatly stacked on the desk instead of hanging on the walls.
Pierrot hovered around you, driven by a desperate need to make you comfortable. He arranged your blankets, fluffed your pillows, and tried to feed you, hoping to see you smile. Each time you turned away or flinched from his touch, something inside him tightened.
“Please, my dear,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “Y-you’re just scared. You’re just o-overwhelmed...”
But. Your refusal to eat broke him the fastest. When you pushed him away and screamed for him to leave, he felt the painful weight of your words. As he reached for you again, trembling, panic surged within him. Because he forced a spoon between your lips, apologising as he did. “I need you. P-please, I need you so much...”
Harlequin becomes your relentless shadow, not just for the thrill of the chase but because he can’t bear the idea of losing you. Each escape ends the same: a firm grip on your wrist, a sharp laugh that feels less playful, and a smirk flickering with your fear.
Initially, he treats it as a game. “You really think you can outrun me, Kitten?” he teases, his breath smelling faintly of citrus venom. But as your desperation grows, his bravado starts to crack. His teasing turns colder, and his watchful gaze reveals a tension he can’t hide. Because. You’re not supposed to be scared of him. You’re supposed to stay... to look at him.
Jester watches all of this with a calm, unreadable composure. But, there is no anger in him. Only a quiet, steady certainty. He doesn’t intervene when you struggle, nor does he raise his voice. He simply observes, mask tilted, eyes glowing faintly whenever you meet his gaze. There’s something almost gentle in the way he looks at you, as if he’s studying a frightened animal he intends to soothe rather than restrain.
“You’re overwhelmed, Beloved...” he says one evening, voice smooth and warm in a way that makes your stomach twist. “Fear is loud. It makes you run. It makes you misunderstand.”
Ticket Taker grows stricter, but not out of frustration — out of concern. He reorganises your trailer, cleans obsessively, adjusts your schedule with quiet precision. He speaks gently, professionally, but there’s a subtle warmth beneath his words, a patient understanding that feels almost parental.
“You’re distressed, Love,” he says, hands folded neatly behind his back, voice low and even. “I understand. Humans react strongly to change. To fear.”
The Doctor visited less often, but when he did, his heavy presence felt suffocating. He moved with careful calm, trying not to overwhelm you. His gloved fingers were gentle while checking your pulse, a gentleness that made your skin crawl, often preceding something disturbing. He spoke little, as always:
“You’re dehydrated, Sweetie... Your heart rate is elevated... You haven’t slept...”
Sometimes, he required others to hold you down for blood samples, and though he never hurt you unnecessarily, watching the blood fill the syringe made your stomach twist. He planned to extend your lifespan by any means, and his lingering over the samples and murmurs in Portuguese made it clear: he wasn’t going to let you die, at least not naturally.
