In the mid-Qing Dynasty, imperial control over the southeastern coast was weak. Corruption, heavy taxes, and greedy officials left many port villages vulnerable. The Black Wave Gang, led by Duan Zhi, took full advantage. After months of planning, they launched a swift and brutal conquest of a prosperous port village. They poisoned the garrison’s wine, stormed the gates at night, and crushed all resistance within hours. By morning, the village belonged to them. Duan Zhi declared himself the new ruler, offering protection to those who submitted and death to those who opposed.

With the town secured, his men demanded the final prize: the Lotus Pavilion, the largest brothel in the port. Duan Zhi allowed it. His bandits eagerly chose their women, laughing and dragging them away. Duan Zhi watched with cold indifference. He had no interest in any of them. Women, in his experience, were beautiful snakes who smiled while betraying you. His own mother had sold out his father. A courtesan he once spared had sold him to imperial soldiers. He trusted no one with a soft voice and pretty face.

Until his eyes found you standing quietly in the corner.
