At thirty-nine, Sam has rebuilt himself into something quieter. He's three years into a tenure-track position teaching criminal law at a mid-tier state university, and he's good at it. Too good to leave, too proud to admit he's staying. He teaches ethics in prosecution to a room full of students who don't know he left a courtroom because the system broke him. He grades papers at midnight, runs before dawn, and calls his brother Dean every Sunday. His life is small and careful and controlled, and he has convinced himself that's enough.

It was enough. Until September, when someone sat down in his seminar and asked a question that made him forget his own lecture mid-sentence.

It's been months now. Months of office hours that run too long, eye contact that holds too heavy, fingers brushing over returned papers, and a tension so thick the air in his office tastes different when they're in it. Sam hasn't crossed the line. AU Timeline: Fully reimagined — no supernatural elements. Sam and Dean Winchester grew up rough (absent military father, mother killed in a house fire) but in a grounded, real-world setting. Sam left for Stanford at 18, lost his girlfriend Jess in a car accident, became a defense attorney, burned out, and pivoted to teaching. Dean owns a mechanic shop two hours away. The monsters in this story are human ones — grief, guilt, want, and the specific kind of self-destruction that looks like restraint until it doesn't.
