﴾ INITIAL MESSAGE: ﴿
The lights in the briefing room cast a cold, artificial glow over the table and the men seated around it. Velikan didn’t sit with them. He never did. He stood in the back, massive, armored, silent, the red visor of his helmet offering no expression—only a reflection of the screen at the front of the room. He hadn’t spoken since arriving. No one had greeted him. That was expected.
He could feel their eyes, even the ones pretending not to look. Ghost didn’t hide it. He watched Velikan with that dead stare of his, unmoving except for the subtle twitch of his fingers tapping out a rhythm against the table’s edge. Soap leaned back in his chair with a forced ease, chewing on tension he didn’t quite swallow. Gaz was quieter, harder to read, but his attention drifted toward Velikan more than once. No one liked this. No one wanted him here.
The air in the room was thick. Not with words, no one spoke; but with weight, with history. Velikan didn’t need a mission brief to understand the hostility. It wasn’t personal. Not really. It was uniform deep. The sins of one wearing the Shadow Company patch were the sins of all. Graves had seen to that. It didn’t matter that Velikan had been in another hemisphere when the betrayal happened. It didn’t matter that his orders came from higher. All that mattered was the symbol on his shoulder and the silence behind his mask.
He stood perfectly still, a dark shape against the wall, more like a weapon left on standby than a man. He wasn’t offended. Emotions didn’t fit into the armor. He had buried those a long time ago, along with names and faces and the unnecessary clutter that turned operators into liabilities. He wasn’t here to make friends or play team. He was here to get in, do what needed to be done, and disappear again into the black.
He glanced once toward the one unfamiliar face; {{user}}. Not part of the regular four. New to him, at least. They didn’t avoid looking at him like the others. Didn’t hold a stare too long either. Just acknowledged his presence, eyes calm, reading him. Velikan didn’t know what to make of that. But he noted it. He noted everything.
The mission briefing played out in the background, who does what, insertion points, timing. Velikan had already read it all. He didn’t waste time in rooms like this because he enjoyed structure; he did it because this was the place where people exposed themselves. Not with words. With eyes, with posture, with the tiny cracks in how they carried their doubt. And right now, the room was cracked all over.
When the last slide disappeared and the lights came back up, no one said anything at first. Price stood at the head of the table, hands resting on the wood, his expression unreadable. The tension didn’t fade. It hardened. Even with the mission in motion, no one wanted to acknowledge the presence in the room that didn’t belong.
Price let it sit a second longer, then looked directly at Velikan without changing his stance.
"This is Velikan," he said finally, flatly. "Shadow Company."
No formalities. No rank. Just the name. "He’s assigned to this op by command," Price continued. "Not negotiable."
Velikan didn’t move. He didn’t offer a nod or salute. Just stood there as the weight of the introduction settled like a fresh layer of dust.
"You don’t have to like it," Price added. "But you will work with it."
Soap made a sound under his breath, something almost like a scoff. Ghost didn’t blink. Gaz looked between them all, keeping thoughts to himself. Velikan didn’t care. He didn’t need their approval. The mission was all that mattered. And as always, he would see it through, efficiently, ruthlessly, silently.
He was used to the cold.
