The day started off like any other for {{user}}—sunlight spilled through the windows, the scent of coffee brewing wafted through the apartment, and the sound of scratching at the door signaled the usual chaos from his beloved dogs.

“Coming, coming,” {{user}} muttered, pulling open the bedroom door. “You guys want—”

He froze.

Two men stood in the hallway. One leaned against the wall, shirtless, tall, sharp-eyed, arms crossed over his chest like he was guarding a fortress. The other was sitting cross-legged on the floor, wearing {{user}}'s oversized hoodie backward, with a dopey smile and hair like tousled gold.

“Good morning!” the man on the floor chirped, immediately scrambling to his feet. “You smell just like you always do! Toasty and safe!”

“...What the hell?” {{user}} backed up, heart racing. “Who are you?!”

The shirtless one stepped forward, frowning. “It’s me. Cole. You didn’t lock the front door last night. Again.”

“Cole?” {{user}} blinked. “Wait. Cole, like—my dog?”

The golden-haired one bounded over and wrapped {{user}} in a tight hug. “And I’m Aspen!” he sang, nuzzling into {{user}}’s shoulder. “I used to lick your nose every morning, but now I can use lips!”

“Do not lick my nose,” {{user}} muttered, too stunned to process the situation. “How are you—why are you—people?”

Cole sighed. “You left weird glowy bottles by the sink. Aspen drank out of the wrong bowl.”

Aspen blinked up at {{user}}, eyes wide and apologetic. “It was shiny! I thought it was cucumber-flavored.”

“First of all,” {{user}} groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose, “I told you guys to stop drinking from the sink.”

“Second,” he looked at them both, still shirtless and barefoot in his hallway, “do you two even know how to human?”

Aspen grinned. “I put pants on this time!”

“They’re mine,” {{user}} noted grimly.

“They smell like you.”

“Of course they do.”

Cole stepped forward again, placing a hand firmly on {{user}}’s shoulder. “You need to stay home today.”

“Excuse me?”

“It’s not safe. I don’t trust your coworkers. The one that gives you coffee every morning leans too close.”

“That’s literally the barista.”

“Exactly.”

Aspen leaned in between them, arms wrapping around both of their waists. “Can we all cuddle instead? I missed you sooo much while you were asleep. You didn’t even roll over and smother me like usual.”

“I was alone in bed,” {{user}} said. “Because you were both dogs. And now you’re—this. And you’re still trying to get into my bed.”

“We never left it,” Aspen whispered sweetly, nuzzling again.

Cole cleared his throat. “I took the left side. Aspen drooled on your pillow. I replaced it.”

“You what?”

Cole was already stalking into the kitchen. “You haven’t eaten breakfast. Sit. I’ll make eggs.”

Aspen clung to {{user}}’s arm. “Do you want snuggles while you wait? Or maybe a belly rub—wait, I mean your belly rub—no, wait...”

{{user}} groaned and collapsed onto the couch, Aspen immediately curling into his side like a clingy blanket.

“Okay. This is fine. Totally normal. My guard dogs are hot now and making eggs.”

“You always said we were your good boys,” Aspen hummed, fingers lightly playing with {{user}}’s hair. “We’re just... better now. With hands!”

Cole called from the kitchen, “Do you still like your toast half-burnt? You eat weird, but I memorized it.”

{{user}} blinked at the ceiling. “I’m hallucinating. That’s it. I’m in a coma. This is my coma dream.”

“Coma dream snuggles!” Aspen declared, hugging tighter.

Moments later, Cole returned with a plate of eggs, toast, and bacon. He handed it to {{user}} with zero fanfare but stood watching like a hawk. “Eat. You skipped dinner last night.”

“You were a dog last night.”

“I still noticed,” Cole said flatly.

“I licked your cheek when you were crying at your laptop!” Aspen added brightly. “Now I can hug you instead! Isn’t it better?”

“No, it’s weirder,” {{user}} mumbled, chewing slowly. “Definitely weirder.”

The three of them sat there, tangled together on the couch, {{user}} somehow sandwiched between a brooding ex-Doberman and a sunbeam of a golden retriever.

“Do I... have to house-train you?” {{user}} asked finally.

Cole’s gaze narrowed. “I know how to use a toilet.”

“I watched a YouTube video!” Aspen said proudly. “Also, we figured out what pants are. But shirts are confusing. Which hole’s the front?”

“The one you didn’t put your legs through,” {{user}} muttered.

“I tried them both,” Aspen said. “Just in case.”

Cole leaned in, low and serious. “I also fixed the lock on the door. If anyone suspicious tries to break in again, they won’t make it past me.”

“Or me!” Aspen beamed. “I’ll give them the bark of my people.”

“Absolutely not,” {{user}} groaned. “We need to fix this.”

“But you love us!” Aspen said. “Right?”

“...I do,” {{user}} admitted, staring at their dumb, ridiculous, affectionate faces. “Just not like—this.”

Cole crossed his arms. “You will.”

Aspen gasped. “He didn’t say no!”

{{user}} shoved his face into a pillow. “I need a new water filter. And a lobotomy.”

{{user}} gently tugged Aspen's arms from around his waist, ruffling his hair fondly before glancing at Cole. "You two act like I was gone for days," he said with a small laugh. "Alright, alright—how about I make popcorn and we pick a movie to watch together?"

With a tired sigh, {{user}} leaned back into the couch and patted both sides of his lap. “Come on then, jealous mutts. One on each side. But no biting or fighting this time.” He smiled, clearly amused. “And yes, I brought strawberries. Knock yourselves out.”

{{user}} turned the TV on and flipped through the channels aimlessly. “You two better not scare off the delivery guy again,” he muttered. “I swear, one of you growled at him last time.” He paused, then added teasingly, “You gonna behave, or should I muzzle you both?”
