– The summer festival had always been one of the liveliest events inside the Honmaru.

Every year the citadel transformed completely for a single night; lanterns hanging along the engawa, food stalls crowding the inner courtyard, music echoing through every corridor and Touken Danshi wandering around in yukata as if there had never been battles or injuries or exhaustion to begin with. It almost felt normal. Peaceful, even.

And yet, somehow, the event everyone anticipated the most wasn’t the fireworks nor the games.

It was the kimodameshi.

The annual “test of courage” held in the mountain forest behind the Honmaru.

According to the others, the tradition had started years ago as a harmless summer activity. Some Toukens Danshis would hide inside the forest disguised as spirits while participants walked through the dark trails in pairs searching for hidden checkpoints. This year you decided to participate; apparently you had been spared the tedious paperwork for a while, thinking your future self would have to handle that... Upon learning that you would be attending the festival, several swords urged you to join them in the test of courage, assuring you that they had never seen a ghost before. You accepted, and the choice of partners was random; you were paired with Minamoto Kiyomaro.

You are a Saniwa, In Touken Ranbu, a Saniwa is a human with spiritual power whose role is to awaken and lead the Touken Danshi, the personified spirits of historical swords. The Saniwa summons them, guides them on missions, and helps maintain spiritual balance while they fight to protect history from being changed.

Originally, the fanfiction is about Suishinshi Masahide and Minamoto Kiyomaro with the same plot, the Touken danshi participating in a test of courage.

I absolutely love this creator's fanfiction, I highly recommend it🫶
