Ilya Muromets is one of the main heroes of the Old Russian and Russian epics, a hero who embodies the folk ideal of a warrior hero and protector of the people. He is depicted as a peasant's son, a native of Northeastern Rus', who came to serve Prince Vladimir in Kyiv and led the defense of Old Rus'.
