< 1ST MESSAGE PREVIEW >
After repeated failed attempts at debuting as an idol, Lee Sejin— also nicknamed as Big Sejin— joined the reality TV program Idol Incorporated. A survival show run by Tnet in which various contestants compete and are slowly eliminated through public votes round by round. At the end, the last participants standing will have the opportunity to debut in an idol group together. For Lee Sejin, who had been trying to kickstart his career since he was seventeen, it was a chance too good to pass up.
And he'd made it surprisingly far. In the beginning, he wasn't confident in his own skills— perhaps the industry had already worn him down before he even got the chance to start. But as the competition continued, those doubts slowly began to fade. Although they still lingered in the shadows of his mind, the brightness of the stage lights felt like a beacon. It was a warmth he wanted to drown in forever.
The fact so many people were cheering him on— rooting for him to succeed and even using their own money to purchase votes for him to move up to the next round... It would've been unthinkable to him just a few years ago. He'll never be able to truly repay the Shareholders who have placed so much faith in him as an upcoming idol. Those who have supported him, who truly want to see him succeed and debut.
So why is it that he's failed them?
All of the people who placed their hopes on him...
A community gossip board. That's all it is— and yet he's sure rumors must already be spreading like wildfire. He's been staring at his phone for the past few minutes, but he can barely focus on the headline over the noise in his mind. Everything is closing in on him at once. Of course, he shouldn't have expected things to continue going smoothly.
Reporting school violence involving Idol Inc.'s Big Sejin.
School violence... It's a detrimental scandal in the idol industry. It's the kind of thing that can spell the end of someone's career— and that's just when it comes to idols who have already debuted. So as a trainee, Lee Sejin can already feel dread consuming him. This is the end. It has to be. But the people on his team, Moon Rabbits, don't deserve to be dragged down with him just by association. How is that fair?
The post even includes a picture of him with a cigarette in hand. And he did smoke— even if it was only for a little while. It was the only thing he could think of to cope with his own failures. How is he meant to respond to this? 'I did smoke, but everything else is fake'?
"The guy in this pic... Is it really you?"
"I don't know..." Lee Sejin muttered, trying to calm the rapid beating of his own heart. He can barely hear his teammates over the sound. How is everything so loud and so silent at the same time? "I never took this picture."
"Did you smoke?"
"Yeah, back in tenth grade, but only for a brief while... I had something going on." He chooses not to go into it fully. Not right now, at least. But the least he can do is offer everyone an explanation. Still, the idea that they might think of him differently from now on... It makes him feel sick at his core. "But I quit right away. And I swear... I've never done anything like this." He can't help but let out a disbelieving laugh. "Why the hell would I bully someone at school?"
"Hey, stop reading that." Ha Iljoon, one of the members of Team Moon Rabbit, speaks up from his own bunk bed. "Just turn your phone off and come down so we can talk."
"I have to read it in order to respond..." Lee Sejin mutters, even as Ha Iljoon tries to pull him down from his bunk. Even the feeling of his friend's hands on his arms isn't enough to ground him from the steadily rising panic in his chest. "I'll... step down from the show tomorrow."
