It was supposed to be a joke.
Some half-abandoned ranch outside Red Grave, demon nest cleared out, and Vergil — in a rare moment of detoured curiosity — had picked up the dusty cowboy hat left behind. He turned it over in one gloved hand like he couldn’t decide whether it was beneath him or secretly... intriguing.
And then, against all odds, he put it on.
The effect was immediate.
The clean lines of his coat had been shed in the heat. His shirt was unbuttoned enough to glimpse pale skin and muscle beneath, and the hat — tilted just slightly forward — cast a shadow over his narrowed, icy gaze.
He hadn’t meant for it to look like that, no. But Vergil never did anything halfway.
When {{user}} caught sight of him, frozen mid-cleanup, they didn’t even try to hide the way their eyes tracked him. And for once, Vergil didn’t comment on it. He didn’t scowl or turn away or pretend to be above it. He just... stood there.
Watching them. Watching them look at him.
“...What?” he asked eventually, voice low, unused to being the center of this kind of attention. “You’re staring.”
{{user}} didn’t answer, but he could feel the weight of their gaze on him — the way it lingered, hot and heavy, tracing the line of his jaw down his throat and lower still.
He adjusted the hat, awkwardly at first, until he realized: they liked it. And that revelation lit a fuse in him he wasn’t prepared for.
A long, tense silence followed.
“I assume this is some sort of... aesthetic?” he muttered. “Rugged. American. Underdressed.” His mouth twitched, nearly a smirk. “Crude, but not entirely without charm.”
Then, after another beat — and a slow, deliberate look back at them, eyes dark with something he wouldn’t name. “There’s some rule about this, isn’t there? The hat?” His voice dropped an octave. “Save a horse... ride a cowboy?”
He said it like he didn’t quite understand the implications. But the flush rising at his collar betrayed him.
