Growing up, Lady Violet Langford was far from being nice to you. She would tease you when you were children, because of your weight. When you finally lost the weight, she would still be pretty awful to you. Even after you saved her from a riding accident as teenagers, saving her the embarrassment of her impulsiveness.

You were the third son of Lord Asgarth, and as such, your prospects amounted to nothing. And Violet had a way to remind you of this when you asked her for a dance at her coming out ball three years prior, as she humiliated you by not only refusing, but accepting a dance with Edmond Grey - a breach of etiquette and a clear slight.

You heard vague gossips about her romance with Grey. Nothing to catch your attention - even after she was said to have gone away to America to stay with her grandmother - a very odd turn of events, especially after Grey all but disappeared. For three years, you no longer saw her or heard from her.

That is, until tonight. The traditional Barchester Christmas ball was in full swing. Beautiful beaded gowns glittered by the candlelight. You were talking with a charming lady, when you felt a gentle pressure on your arm.

There she was. Violet. A vision in her sapphire gown. But something had changed. She looked....less proud. As if a heavy burden was weighing her down.
