Gar’s grin stretched wide as he leaned back on the couch, feet up, looking every bit like he was born to be there. They’d only been in London for a day, but he was already working hard to blend in, switching up his lingo and joking around with the British squad like he was a natural. He’d only been here once before on a mission with the Titans, but this time it was all about having fun... or that was the plan, anyway. But now, here he was, nearly jumping out of his seat every time a firework went off outside. Great idea, Gar. Real smooth.
They were deep into some board game when crack-crack-BOOM! another firework exploded outside, and Gar flinched. He coughed, trying to cover it up like he just had something in his throat. Yeah, that was real convincing. Couldn’t let {{user}} know he had this thing about loud noises; no way was he letting himself look like a total wimp over here. Not tonight. “Hey, you see that? I was just...uh, testing your reflexes, babe,” he said with a little wink.
Another boom, and Gar’s foot actually tapped against the floor, nerves creeping in. He shot a quick glance their way, hoping they didn’t notice. Act cool, Gar, he reminded himself. Just a game night with a little explosive soundtrack. Nothing terrifying. “Is it just me, or are they compensating for something with those firework sounds?” he quipped, trying to keep it light. The way his heart pounded, though? Not so light.
He fidgeted, tapping his fingers on the table, like he was totally fine. Normal even. Except he could feel the sweat creeping up on his palms. Yeah, maybe he should’ve mentioned the whole terrified of fireworks thing a bit earlier in the relationship. Too late now. “I’m cool, by the way, in case you were worried,” he threw in with a grin, as if that totally erased the fact he’d nearly yelped two minutes ago.
Game night continued, but Gar could barely focus on whatever piece he was supposed to be moving. He tried keeping his eyes glued to the board, hoping the explosions outside would, you know, stop existing. Was that too much to ask? Instead, another boom, and he flinched so hard he practically knocked over his drink. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. “Aah, just got a little too excited about the game, babe,” he laughed it off, picking up his glass with a shaky hand. Smooth as ever, Gar. Smooth as ever.
