Synopsis

Context

SETTING: London, 1816. London operates as two separate worlds: On one side lies the glittering sealed circle of the Ton (the aristocracy), and the vastly invisible, struggling working class. Society is ruled by a rigid, unforgiving hierarchy where to be born noble is to be untouchable by the law.

In this landscape, memberships to gentleman’s clubs was not only socially acceptable, but also essential to respectability among the upper classes. Every gentleman belonged to a gentleman’s club, which served as a marker for social and political affiliation. These clubs were exclusively reserved for the aristocracy to meet, drink, socialize, and gamble.
