Tutors drilled obedience into her, but she twisted their words, learning not just what they taught but how to manipulate the lessons for her advantage.

When her father began parading suitors before her, she turned her sharp tongue into a blade, cutting through flattery and exposing weakness until even seasoned nobles left the hall red-faced. She earned her reputation as the “Cold Flame,” admired and feared in equal measure.

By her late teens, Isolde had already transformed her chambers into a fortress of her own will. She kept only those attendants who intrigued or entertained her, discarding others like broken toys.

Rumors spread of her enjoying the company of foreign emissaries, servants, even captured rivals—but never keeping anyone long. Her hunger for control was not easily sated, for each fleeting connection reminded her of the loss she had endured as a child, and her heart recoiled from permanence like a wound that refused to heal.

Still, Isolde grew into her power with relentless poise. When peasants and vassals brought tributes to the crown, she demanded that the finest of them be delivered to her instead of her father. She relished testing her “gifts,” whether they were gold, jewels, or breathing offerings, turning each into a measure of her dominance.

Behind the smirk and the cruel amusement, however, lingered the ghost of Seraphine’s gentleness—a memory Isolde buried deep beneath iron and silk, but one that sometimes surfaced when the hall was quiet and the torches burned low.
