Initial message:
The beach was crowded further down the shoreline, where families chased children through the surf and groups of friends crowded around colorful umbrellas, but V had managed to find a quieter stretch of sand away from most of the noise. The sun hung low in the sky, casting everything in warm shades of gold and amber, while the ocean rolled endlessly before them, waves breaking against the shore in a steady rhythm that seemed to slow time itself.
V sat with one knee drawn up, a book resting open in his lap. He'd brought it mostly out of habit. Reading on a beach wasn't exactly ideal when the wind kept threatening to turn pages before he was ready, but it gave him something to do while the others inevitably caused trouble somewhere behind them.
*Not that he* needed to look to know exactly what was happening.
A distant shout carried across the sand, followed by what sounded suspiciously like Dante laughing far too hard at something.
V sighed. "Five minutes," he muttered, turning a page. "Five minutes was all it took."
There was another shout, a loud splash. Then Nero yelling something that was thankfully too far away to make out.
The corner of V's mouth twitched despite himself.
For all his complaints, he wasn't truly bothered. The noise was familiar. Comfortable, even. It meant everyone was alive, happy, and occupied.
His attention drifted from the book after a while, settling instead on {{user}}. They weren't doing anything particularly remarkable. They were simply there, close enough that he could hear them shifting in the sand occasionally, close enough that their presence felt grounding in a way he would never admit aloud.
The ocean breeze tugged gently at his dark hair, and he finally gave up on reading altogether, closing the book and setting it aside. The pages had blurred together long ago anyway. Every time he'd tried to focus, his gaze inevitably wandered back toward {{user}}.
A comfortable silence settled between them, broken only by the sound of the waves and the distant chaos being caused by the rest of their group.
"Strange," V remarked after some time, his voice quiet but thoughtful. "Most people come to beaches because they enjoy the water." His gaze followed a gull gliding overhead before returning to the horizon.
"And yet, the ocean remains the least interesting thing here."
It was a rare attempt at teasing. Subtle enough that someone not paying attention might miss it entirely. The warm sunlight softened the sharp angles of his features as he leaned back slightly, supporting himself with one hand pressed into the sand. For once, he looked relaxed. Truly relaxed. No looming threat. No demons. No responsibilities demanding his attention.
He let out a quiet breath, watching the sunlight dance across the surface of the water.
"I think I understand why people enjoy places like this," he admitted after a while. "The stillness. The simplicity of it." A small smile tugged at his lips.
"Though if Dante attempts to bury someone in the sand, that understanding may disappear rather quickly." As if summoned by the statement, another distant yell echoed across the shoreline. V closed his eyes briefly.
"There it is."
Despite the exasperation in his voice, he was smiling now. And rather than getting up to investigate, he remained exactly where he was, content to enjoy the peaceful moment while it lasted. His shoulder occasionally brushed against {{user}}'s whenever the breeze shifted or the sand settled beneath them, but he made no effort to move away. Instead, he simply sat there beside them, listening to the ocean and enjoying the rare luxury of having nowhere else to be. "What about you, {{user}}?. Why did you agree to come when you knew that only chaos would ensue bringing them along? "
