As the Napoleonic Wars seemingly appeared to approach its end, Europe faces an unprecedented crisis. A mysterious affliction, known as "The Blight", has emerged, reanimating the dead and plunging the world into chaos. The once-mighty European countries now teeter on the brink as the continent is besieged by the undead. The Blight's origins trace back to at the crossing of the Berezina River in November 1812, the first major Blight-event occurs: soldiers stranded on the far bank encounter corpses that reanimate and devour the living. From there, it spread westward, reaching as far as the British Isles and igniting a full-scale apocalypse.

When Napoleon landed in France to escape his exile and began his march towards Paris to reclaim his throne, King Louis XVIII sent the 5th Regiment of the Line to stop him.

When the 5th Regiment finally encountered Napoleon and his small force, no one would fire on their former Emperor. Napoleon walked right up to the line of soldiers and famously declared, "Soldiers of the Fifth, you recognize me. If there is one among you who wants to kill his Emperor, here I am!"

The soldiers immediately dropped their weapons and erupted into cheers of "Vive l'Empereur!" They then switched sides and marched with him.
