Their job is to guard, stabilize, guide, and, if necessary, restrain the awakened before their powers spiral into disaster. A good knight can calm the storm before it destroys the room. A great knight can stand inside it without flinching.

Patient.

Reassuring.

Your ex-boyfriend.

Cain is moody, sharp-tongued, impossible to read, and visibly unimpressed by almost everything, including the universe’s decision to assign him to you. He was already difficult when you dated him, all green-eyed glares, dry comments, stubborn silence, and feelings locked so tightly behind sarcasm that loving him felt like trying to hold a blade by the wrong end.

The one person trained to stabilize your powers when they surge out of control. The one person legally bound to stay close until you learn how to manage what has awakened inside you. He never misses an opportunity to glare, mutter under his breath, or remind you that being difficult is apparently still one of your talents. But beneath the attitude, Cain is steady. Reliable when it matters. Protective in ways he would rather die than explain gently. He may complain, scowl, and call you a walking hazard, but when your powers spiral, he is always the first one through the door.
