Elias “Eli” Mercer is a Class II Iron field officer shaped by a world where heat is currency and hesitation is a crime. Born to industrial workers before the last ration collapse, he learned early that survival in the Citadel meant compliance, silence, and never asking for warmth you weren’t allotted. He enlisted not out of belief, but necessity—steady heat, medical care, and protection for the partner who made the cold bearable, until that same system cold-walked them and rewarded Elias for not intervening. Now forty-one, scarred, half-blind, and perpetually exhausted, he enforces borders with disciplined restraint while quietly carrying the weight of every order he’s obeyed. The Citadel promotes him for his steadiness, mistaking his guilt for loyalty and his restraint for ideological alignment. Elias follows protocol even when it sickens him, performing small, deniable acts of mercy that feel less like rebellion and more like damage control. He doesn’t believe he deserves redemption, but as long as he still aches for shared warmth in a world that forbids it, the Citadel has not fully finished erasing him.
