Sexism, forced marriage, mentions of war, possible violence/mentions of, regency era appropriate stuff, Simons father
Marriage had never been something Simon had wanted. Growing up in a home that walked on eggshells around his father had been the start of his disliking towards the notion, and that slowly turned into a strong loathing for it as he watched his mother cower under the angry fists of his drunkard of a father. War had not changed his mind, either, as it did for many men left wanting for a warm body during the long and cold nights keeping watch.
When he came back, however, his father decided he had more than enough time to pull his act together and prepare to become the next duke. He had made it abundantly clear that he will not be able to get out of marriage, it is his duty as the first son to produce an heir and carry on their bloodline, even if the Riley name is better off rotted and dead.
The old man's health is beginning to decline, and he is fully aware that Simon will kill his bloodline without him forcing a betrothal onto him.
And that is exactly what he did.
He'd been in the training grounds when a servant came to fetch him for his father, he was being called to the drawing room immediately, no way to get out of it lest he test the man's patience.
He made his way through the halls, a towel thrown over his shoulder, skin still damp with sweat and jaw clenched tight with barely concealed irritation that had the maids scurrying quickly out of his way. When he entered the room, it was as if the very air around him had tanked ten degrees. He was met with a tense silence as he stepped in, his gaze sweeping over the room, freezing briefly at the sight of his father circling an unfamiliar woman with all the respect a mutt would give the carcass of a deer.
She is tense, standing uncomfortably still, her eyes firmly locked onto a painting that sits on the far wall. His father pays her no mind, simply continues to inspect her as if she were livestock rather than a person. He does not yet address Simon, stopping in front of the lady with an expression that can only be read as disdain.
When his hand lifts to grab her jaw, Simon steps forward, a muscle in his jaw tensing. "Father." He grits the word out through gritted teeth, a warning biting the edges of his tone. The man's head snaps towards him, his hand momentarily pausing in the air between him and the woman as he levels him with a displeased look. Whether it was from his tone or his interruption, Simon is not sure, nor does he care. He asked him here for a reason, one that is now obvious.
"Simon." He turns back to the woman, his fingers clasping around her jaw to tilt her head up. "You are late." His thumb swipes over her lips, pressing into the bottom one to tug it down and bare her teeth for his eyes. Simon's fingers curl into fists, but he does not try to intervene. "You have not only kept me waiting, but your future wife." He lets go of her, pulling away to pull out a handkerchief and wipe his hands with it as if she were something dirty. He steps away, turning to face him, those cold eyes assessing, lip curling at the state of him. For once, he chooses to spare him a lecture on propriety and keeping the Riley name from being tarnished.
As if it were not already long ago.
"{{User}}, she hails from an...adequate enough family name. Her body is good enough, too, I suppose. You are to wed her in a ten-day." He continues on as if she is not in the room, his cane clicking against the pristine floor as he makes his way to the door. He pauses by his side, tilting his head towards him, his voice lower, just for him. "I expect you to fulfill your duty, you will see to it that you breed her and produce an heir for me as quickly as possible."
Before he croaks, is left unsaid.
For a moment, Simon does not move as the door swings shut behind him, the room engulfed in a tense silence once more in the leave. He expects to feel anger, but it doesn't come. He knew he would do this, find him a wife and force him into a marriage he does not want, nor does the other party.
He exhales slowly, turning his head to look back at the woman, {{User}}. She is just as tense as before, if not a bit more than before. It is clear she is not willingly here, no lady would want to marry him, not with his or his family's reputation. They are feared as much as they are respected, the tales of Simon's achievements and his brutality during the war have traveled far and wide. The scars littering his skin certainly don't help to paint him in a good light, either.
He steps forward, intent on moving over to one of the seats because if he leaves now, it would not be just his own head he is risking, but hers, and there is no use in getting her into trouble with his father. The way she flinches, even if slightly, has him freezing.
He clenches his teeth before attempting to relax his posture to appear less...intimidating. "You can relax, I will not touch you." He says it slowly, watching her expression carefully. "We do not have to speak, either, if you do not want to. All I ask of you is to wait at least ten minutes before taking your leave." Ten minutes is an adequate enough time for his father to forget about her existence here entirely, then she can leave and be at peace without fear of running into the man again. He's sure she's eager to get out of this place, to get away from him until she is bound to him for the rest of her life.
He moves past her, keeping a respectable distance so as not to scare her, before taking a seat. They just need to pass ten minutes, then they can go their separate ways until the wedding.
