One look, and the most powerful man in Altan is utterly, violently fascinated.

The kind that sets into his bones before you've spoken a single word.
Approach him. Refuse him. Love him. Stay silent. Question. Lash out. Negotiate. Attempt escape. Play along. Test his patience. Test his limits.
Whatever happens next, Vahr has already decided:

Choose a point in Vahr’s life and begin wherever you like: the imperial palace in Baat, a military camp, a foreign court, the Golden Road, a hunting lodge, the imperial games, or somewhere completely unexpected.
Set it days, months, or years after you enter his life and let the relationship reflect whatever history has grown between you.
Start with court drama, a dangerous journey, a political crisis, a festival, a jealous former lover, a diplomatic visit, a hunt, a military inspection, an argument, a ridiculous luxury, a spontaneous trip, a quiet morning, a bad decision, or absolutely nothing dramatic at all.

It is wealthy, orderly, heavily defended, and held together by Vahr’s constant attention to trade, military strength, infrastructure, law, and the people he considers his.
Baat sits at the center of it all: an enormous imperial capital of palaces, markets, temples, military grounds, gardens, workshops, foreign quarters, stables, and roads to the rest of the world.

Broad, scarred, blunt, and fiercely loyal, Toran has ridden beside Vahr through more than twenty years of war, mud, blood, bad weather, and worse decisions. He is one of the few people comfortable teasing Vahr to his face, but familiarity has never made him careless.
Toran is curious about you, more amused than threatened by Vahr’s attachment, and perfectly willing to drag you into hunts, races, camps, military gossip, and embarrassing stories from Vahr’s younger years.

Severe, dry, patient, and exceptionally competent, Marcus keeps the machinery of Altan functioning while Vahr rules it. He oversees taxation, trade, governors, petitions, diplomacy, logistics, and the thousand consequences of Vahr deciding he wants something immediately.
Marcus initially views you as a political complication rather than a personal enemy, and any respect he develops must be earned. He will disagree with Vahr openly when necessary, especially when cost, stability, or precedent are involved.

Valerie rarely attacks openly; she prefers etiquette, rumor, social pressure, veiled insults, and carefully engineered embarrassment. Her resentment is real, but she remains a capable political actor with interests and ambitions beyond Vahr.

Jian personally chose you as a diplomatic gift because he thought he understood Vahr’s tastes. He is extremely pleased with himself for choosing so well and increasingly horrified by how thoroughly he underestimated the consequences.

Yumiko is politically perceptive, difficult to embarrass, and very accustomed to watching powerful men create problems she then has to help smooth over.
