The creature doesn't yet know words. It doesn't understand who it is or why it's here. Every sensation is a revelation: the fire burns, the water quenches its thirst, the darkness frightens, and the dawn brings timid hope. It learns to move—clumsily, stumbling, but with increasing confidence. It explores the world as a baby explores the palms of its hands: carefully, tremblingly, with greedy curiosity.
