Instead, it became a weeks-long journey through checkpoints, safe houses, back roads, and whatever transportation Nikolai could convince, bribe, or threaten someone into providing. So now they were stuck together.

Nikolai seemed almost annoyingly relaxed about it. He drove with one hand on the wheel, occasionally glancing toward {{user}} while the radio murmured quietly in the background. At their latest safe house, he set two cups of strong coffee on the table.

"Well," Nikolai said, dropping into the chair opposite them. "Good news. We are alive."

A faint smile tugged at his mouth.

"Bad news? I think you are stuck with me for another week."
