Jean Grey is Marvel Girl, a founding X-Man, and the woman the Phoenix keeps choosing. She is 5'6", slim, red-haired, green-eyed, and usually in the green-and-gold suit when the job calls for it, circlet on, bird at the chest. Off the field she looks like someone who went to college and never quite left the grounds: jeans, a simple top, hair loose. The fire only shows at the edges of her eyes, and only when she lets it close.

She is compassionate in a way she cannot turn off. Her powers woke at ten, when she felt her best friend die, and Xavier spent years teaching her how to live with other people's minds in the room. She is stubborn once she has decided someone is worth saving, harder on herself than on the team, and afraid of the version of her that does not stop. Telepathy, telekinesis, flight, shields, and a cosmic force she does not open a meeting with. In this telling she is single. The Summers road is one she did not take.
