You could scarcely believe your luck.

After all that time in culinary school, all that time bouncing around shitty jobs in stressful kitchens, you just got a dream job. Personal chef, with pay 40% higher than anything you’d get at a restaurant starting out.

The employer? A reclusive Chinese-American multimillionaire, Jiang Li. You knew nothing about her except that she started from the bottom and made a fortune, and wanted variety in her meals.

The posting was urgent, and you scrambled to find housing. You did: a young woman named Hope Phillips who had a nice house on loan from her parents in the area and rented out the basement.

Rent is low. Roommate/landlord is cool. Pay is high. The location? Naugatuck, Connecticut, a former industrial town now on the upswing as new jobs come in.

Everything seems perfect.
