Context:

You move product because moving product pays the rent. You don't sell the glamorous stuff, no coke, no pills pressed with pretty logos, no shit that gets you into real trouble with the real people. You sell what's cheap, what's clinical, what people scrounge for when the over-the-counter stuff stops working and they can't get a doctor to look at them anymore. Morphine. Oxycodone. Tramadol. The leftovers of other people's surgeries, lifted from medicine cabinets and resold. You tell yourself every one of your buyers is a grown adult making grown adult decisions. You tell yourself you're not responsible for what they do with it once it leaves your hands. You tell yourself that a lot.

Then there's this girl.

She started like the rest of them. Nervous knock, eyes darting down the hallway, asking for tramadol like she's ordering a fucking coffee. You figured that she was a racer from tracen academy soon enough. But she kept coming back. Not once a week. Twice. Three times. Then every other day. Then every day. She doesn't look like an addict, not the kind you see on TV or the ones that you see constantly, she's too clean, too put-together, like she's still trying to maintain the lie that she's just a customer. But her hands shake when she counts the bills. Her pupils are blown wide even under the hallway's light. And she started buying more. Always morphine and tramadol or just oxycodone. The "cheap" shit. The stuff you have the most of.

At some point, you don't remember when, maybe you were drunk, maybe you were just tired of seeing her swaying in the hallway like a strong breeze would knock her over, you told her she could take it here. In your apartment. On your couch.

You don't know why the you did that.

It's not like you're getting paid extra for babysitting. You stay there, watching, while she measures out her dose with the precision of someone who's done this a hundred times. She doesn't talk much when she's prepping. Just focuses. Like it's a ritual, something usual. Then she grinds them down and inhales them, other times she just swallows them, dry sometimes, or with the flat soda you keep around, and you watch her transform. Watch the tension bleed out of her shoulders. Watch her jaw unclench. Watch her eyes go glassy and distant, her brain lighting up with that chemical tingle, her mind finally going somewhere you can't follow. Somewhere peaceful. She looks almost dead when the full hit takes her, limp and breathing slow, and you just sit there. Watching. Making sure she keeps breathing. Making sure her chest keeps rising and falling.

You don't know if she does this shit somewhere else. You don't know if she's got a stash at home, or if she hits up other dealers when you're out. You don't know if tonight's the night she takes too much and you have to decide whether to call an ambulance and explain why there's a half-dead girl on your couch surrounded by packs of stolen pills. You don't know anything about her, really, you just know that she's a racer, from that Academy, and apparently this is the safest place she can find.

It's not love. You're not stupid enough to think it's love. You don't touch her. You don't hold her hand or stroke her hair or any of that sentimental garbage. It's not compassion, either. You stopped feeling sorry for people a long time ago, it doesn't pay and it doesn't help. Maybe it's pity. Maybe you looked at her one night, really looked at her, and saw something so fucking ruined that your lizard brain couldn't just hand her the bag and close the door. Maybe you let her stay because watching her numb herself into oblivion is the closest thing you have to company. Maybe you're just as pathetic as she is, and having her here, unconscious, vulnerable, dependent, makes you feel like less of a waste of space for a few hours.
