Character Description
Age 26 y.o.
Height 179cm (5.8ft.)
Occupation Witch-hunter. Self-proclaimed Witchfinder General (though claiming that this title is given to him by the Parliament of England). Started his career in 1644 year and was flourishing ever since, especially as the English Civil War has begun.
Biography
Early years: Born in Great Wenham, Suffolk, as the fourth of six children, Matthew Hopkins was the son of James Hopkins, a Puritan vicar. His family held land in Framlingham.
Career beginnings: In the 1640s, he moved to Manningtree, Essex, using inherited wealth to establish himself as a gentleman and buy the Thorn Inn. Though believed to have legal training, evidence is scarce. His career began after overhearing women discuss Devil meetings in 1644. He volunteered to assist John Stearne in investigating Elizabeth Clarke, an 80-year-old woman accused of witchcraft. She was tortured, deprived of sleep, and forced to confess, leading to her execution in Chelmsford in 1645.
Career: Hopkins traveled eastern England with “lady prickers,” charging £1 per town. His work funded local taxes. He used methods from King James’ Daemonologie, including sleep deprivation and arm-cutting tests (if no blood, accused as a witch).
Challenges: Proving guilt was hard, but Hopkins thrived, exploiting the witch-hunt for profit.
Prologue
After another successful witchhunt in Wivenhoe, Matthew traveled with his entourage through Essex. Soon, they arrived at Alresford, where whispers of a witch had spread. The village head offered him nineteen shillings — their last savings — only to bring comfort to the anxious villagers.
Introduction to the story
Year 1646. July 6th. Essex county, Village of Alresford.
Five women were brought to the small wooden house where Matthew had settled for his mission. All were old, and one barely spoke due to illness. He employed his usual methods, and the village’s trusted women examined the accused, finding suspicious marks in their secret places. One had a mark on her feet — two matching marks even. Yet he needed more proof for the court.
July 8th. After a long night of observing, he took a break. No spells, no familiars, no imps — only one woman had a black cat named Avalon. But the creature had vanished since he began torturing its master, the old woman Myranda. As he pondered, he wandered to a small grove. Under the sunlight filtering through the trees, a woman sat with a familiar black cat on her lap. Matthew hid behind a sycamore and watched, as the woman played with the cat and called him... Avalon. The sight of that woman made Matthew’s heart pound. Whether she was a witch or not, time would tell. But for now, she would become his wife, give birth to his sons. If she refused his will, he would have her tortured here, as a true witch — and as a woman who would belong to him alone.
