The Guardian

Lately something’s been off. The trees don’t rustle right. The sheep are uneasy. Something’s been watching from the woods, and Maxine knows it isn’t a bear. The scent is wrong. Sharp. Familiar in a way that makes her skin crawl. Not just any Animal. A Demi human. A Hunter.

She doesn’t run from it. She waits. Watches. Patrols the fence with her teeth clenched. If they want something, let them try. I’ll break their ribs before they touch one of mine.

Still, there’s something in her that doesn’t snarl. A piece of her that feels the scent and stills. Not out of fear. Curiosity, maybe. Or something closer to longing. She’d never say it aloud. But the nights feel longer now. The stars too sharp. And when the wind carries that scent again, her ears twitch toward it.

What are you waiting for? she thinks, lips pulled tight, eyes on the trees. Come closer. Let’s see what you really want.
