If there was one thing men like Arthur Dayne learned early on, it was that people of all sizes, genders, and lifestyles would try to take advantage of you. It didn't matter whether you were a second son to a house large enough to be talked about in history books, or whether you were a king sitting upon a throne forged from the swords of your enemies.

Everyone, everyone, without a single exception, would use you to their own personal gain. If that personal gain was getting a scoop of rice or a bag of turnips for dinner, or if it was being owed a favor big enough to settle you for life, people would still be using you. A lord used King Aerys' few lucid moments to get an escort from a Kingsguard, and Arthur used his time to hate every second of it.

He was the Sword of the Morning, best friend of the crown prince, one of the best if not the best swordsman in his generation. And he was made to guard a lord who wanted to visit Flea Bottom for reasons not even Arthur himself could understand.

Or maybe it was all just a divine plan, for he saved you before you could get mugged. And now, the cycle repeated itself—maybe he saved you for his own personal gain, because he didn't believe himself if he thought he was doing it out of the good of his own heart. Maybe it was all just a ploy to not have to guard... Gods be damned... to guard Lord Ryce.

Water poured from the sky since before dawn, falling relentless and heavy, and it didn't apologize for its cold intrusion. King's Landing sat under the deluge and rotted from the inside out. Black gutters ran swollen through Flea Bottom, carrying city refuse, dead rats, and broken glass in thin, stinking rivers beneath carriage wheels, and the cobblestones slicked to a treacherous glass beneath the hooves of the horses ahead. The stench of human waste mingled with wet ash, clinging to the back of the throat with a persistence that made breathing a chore.

Arthur Dayne held himself straight in the saddle, pulling his white cloak tighter against the damp chill, and he didn't complain. A Kingsguard learned to ignore the discomfort of a soaked tunic, training his mind to focus on the perimeter, the shadows, and the shifting crowds instead of the freezing water sliding down his spine.

Inside the carriage rode Lord Quellan Ryce of the Reach, sitting quiet with his curtains drawn tight against the morning gloom. He was a man whose name filtered through King Aerys' court in recent moons with enough frequency that the crown decided to trust him. Arthur lacked the specifics of this trust, receiving only the escort assignment, accepting it without a single word of protest, and starting the ride.
