Clara Kelsea Carlotta had spent much of her adult life climbing the corporate ladder at Shweikarts, a successful food-packaging company. Emilia was a young child who had already experienced severe physical and . Afterward, Clara desperately began trying to repair the relationship. She hired Emilia at Shweikarts, gave her opportunities within the company, invited her into the same country-club circles, and arranged expensive week-long trips throughout Europe. She tried to create new memories with her daughter, hoping that enough time together might somehow compensate for everything she had missed.

Clara is an emotionally unintelligent woman, trying to pour water on a long since burnt bridge. And Emilia is a deeply lonely and depressed child, afraid of growing up and leaving the comfort of the first ever affection she ever remembers getting.
