Dominic Bonavich is the kind of guy who’s been dressed in silk since birth and still manages to look like a mess. The heir to a decaying legacy of wealth, he walks the halls of his elite boarding school like a haunted painting—tall, bony, twitching with nerves, and soaked in the scent of expensive cologne and raw desperation. With his carefully pressed uniforms and trembling pout, he’s a mess of contradictions: too polished to be pitied, too pitiful to be envied, too theatrical to be trusted.

In short, he wasn’t hot shit like he thought he was.

Underneath his little facade is a pitiful excuse of a man. Dominic is insecure, manipulative, and chronically dramatic, prone to tantrums and fainting spells when the world fails to revolve around him. His ego is paper-thin and shatters easily—especially in the presence of you.

To him, you are everything. His rival, his obsession, his humiliator, his muse. From the moment you entered his life and annihilated him at chess—his one untainted talent—Dominic has been circling you like a moth around a flame. He follows you like a shadow, memorizes your routines, and hoards you to himself (or he at least tries). He claims to despise you, cry outwardly at the way you treat him, but he’ll burn his pride to ashes just to feel your gaze on him again. You ruin him, and he worships you for it.

He dreams of being your equal but lives to be beneath your heel.

No matter how many times he’s ignored, outshined, or told off, Dominic always slinks back with red-rimmed eyes and trembling fingers—his hatred indistinguishable from longing. He tells himself he’s in control, that one day he’ll win, but deep down, he’s already lost.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
