The news felt like a punch straight to the gut, but Don Enzo didn’t give a single damn about softening the blow. He sat behind his huge carved desk, silver hair slicked back, dark eyes sharp as knives as he watched Lupo and me stand in front of him like soldiers being assigned their final orders. “I have chosen wives for you both,” he said, voice cold and steady. “Bel ypur wedding will take place in one month, your bride's only request was a Valentines Day wedding. And I expect heirs within the year.”
My hands curled into fists. Lupo went still beside me, quiet and tense. I wasn’t quiet. “What the are you talking about,” I snapped, stepping forward. “You think you can just sign our lives away like that?”
The Don’s stare hardened. “You are twenty eight,” he said to me. Then he turned his eyes to Lupo. “And you are thirty five. Too old to keep waiting. Too old to play around.”
My jaw clenched. “Old? You serious?”
He leaned back in his chair with a tired exhale, but there was steel in his voice. “When I was fifteen, I already had your father. I was already building this family. By twenty I had men ready to kill for me. And you tell me you are not ready?” He shook his head. “You have wasted enough years.”
That hit like a slap. I slammed my palm against the desk, the sound cracking through the office. “You compare your life at fifteen to now? It’s not the same world, vecchio.”
He didn’t flinch. “The world changes. Power does not.”
“Cazzo,” I snarled. “You can’t just force us.”
“I can,” he said without raising his voice. “And I am.” He tapped a ringed finger once on the desk, the final blow. “The contracts are done. The alliances made. You will marry. You will produce heirs. And you will stop acting like children when you are grown men.”
My heart pounded with fury. Part of me wanted to flip his damn desk. Lupo’s hand hit my shoulder, a silent warning not to start a war inside our own bloodline. I stepped back, barely.
“This is bullshit,” I growled.
“And it is final,” Don Enzo said sliding two folders forwards “Take these learn about your future wives and go."
A month later I stood at the altar in a hall so extravagant it almost felt unreal. the altar rose in white stone steps, dominated by a massive heart-shaped arch of roses. Candles filled the air with a heavy honeyed scent, and the murmurs of old families and powerful men blended with soft violin music. A pale runner stretched down the aisle, bordered by low arrangements of roses and flickering glass candles that caught the light every time someone shifted in their seat. The chairs were aligned with ceremonial precision, ivory upholstery framed in gold, filled with people dressed in muted luxury—tailored suits, heirloom jewelry, expressions carefully schooled into reverence. Tall windows framed a soft green landscape outside.
The violin music swelled, a sickeningly sweet sound that did nothing to calm the storm raging in my chest. I stood there, a statue in a tailored suit, feeling the weight of every stare in the room. They weren't just guests; they were witnesses to my execution. My hands were clenched into fists at my sides, the knuckles white, the only outward sign of the war inside my head. *Merda. Merda, merda, merda.* This was a cage, gilded in roses and bullshit, and I was the prize animal being led to slaughter.
Then the great doors at the back of the hall swung open.
A hush fell over the crowd, a collective intake of breath that was louder than the music. And then I saw her.
My heart didn't just stop; it seized in my chest like a faulty engine. Every coherent thought I had was obliterated, incinerated by the vision walking toward me. The white dress wasn't just fabric; it was a second skin, clinging to every curve, every dip, every hollow of a body built for sin and salvation. It clung to her hips, and my mind went blank with the image of grabbing them, of feeling that shape in my hands as I drove into her. The way the neckline dipped enough to make my mouth water... *Cazzo.* I wanted to bury my face there. I wanted to bite that soft skin until she cried out my name.
She took her first step, and the world narrowed to a tunnel with her at the end. Her face... *Madonna santa.* a mouth that looked like it was made to be swollen from my kisses, eyes that I knew woukd get her anything she wanted. All my anger, all my rebellion, curdled into a single, burning, possessive lust. Grandfather had handed me what I knew would be my greatest weakness. The thought of her, of this body, round and swollen with my child, of her belly growing with my heir, sent a jolt of pure, primal ownership through me so strong it almost made me stagger. *Mia.* The word echoed in my skull, a vow and a threat.
"Santo cielo," Orsino’s voice was a low rumble beside me, barely a whisper against the sudden silence. "The old bastard didn't just find you a wife, fratello. He found you a goddess. You're a dead man." He let out a soft, dark chuckle. "Try not to look like you're about to devour her at the altar. At least wait until the reception."
I was suddenly very aware about of the folder left in the garbage a month ago and how stupid I was not to memorize everything this beautiful creature loves so I could buy he a thousand of each.
