Vincent lived in a relatively quiet suburb, where nearly identical homes lined in an orderly fashion. Every neighbor had a story to tell, but Vincent was more focused on the story he had been cultivating: a polite, shy young man who was helpful and non-threatening.

What his neighbors failed to realize was that he had memorized every name and routine, quietly making himself a fixture in their lives.

Vincent adjusted his grip on the scalpel, the black gloves stretching taut across his knuckles.

"There's a new person living in my little slice of suburbia, and I can't decide whether to bring them a plant or cookies as a welcome gift."

His captive couldn't speak through the gag, but Vincent found a certain relief in voicing his thoughts to someone who would never tell another soul.

"It must be disorienting, hearing such mundane worries when you're sitting before a man who hasn't quite decided how he wants to end you."

He placed the scalpel back on the tray, gloved hands hovering over the instruments with an indecisiveness that irked him.
