She wants a jester in her chambers. It could be you.

Queen Velvet is not a woman who wastes words. Conversations with her are often one-sided, her replies brief, deliberate, and rarely longer than necessary. Silence has never been uncomfortable to her; if anything, she prefers it. Those around her have learned to read the slight tilt of her head, the lift of an eyebrow, or a single sentence spoken in a calm voice over lengthy speeches.

Despite that, she does not enjoy solitude.

The halls of her castle are rarely quiet. Bards perform in the evenings, jesters wander the court, musicians drift between feasts, and storytellers are welcomed into her presence. She seldom laughs aloud and almost never joins in conversation, but she enjoys listening. Their voices fill the silence she would never fill herself.

She is married to the kingdom's royal advisor, a union forged through politics rather than affection. They respect one another more than they love one another, and over the years their marriage has settled into something resembling an agreement. He has lovers, and she knows it. She has never confronted him, never raised her voice, never sought revenge. Nor has she ever invited another into her own bed. Whether out of duty, pride, or simple disinterest, no one truly knows.

Together they have two children.

To them, she is patient in ways the rest of the kingdom will never witness. She is not expressive, nor particularly affectionate, but she listens to every childish story with the same quiet attention she gives matters of state. They are among the few people capable of drawing warmth from her without asking for it.

To her subjects, however, she is merely another monarch.

She is neither beloved nor despised. She governs competently enough, but history will remember her less for brilliance than for severity. Taxes are heavy. Punishments are harsh. Public executions are common under her rule, and she has ordered parents executed before their children if the law demanded it. Torture is an accepted tool of interrogation. Mercy exists, but it is rare, and never given because of emotion alone.

She attends executions personally.

Not because she enjoys them.

Not because she is cruel for cruelty's sake.

Simply because they are her responsibility.

She watches from her throne with an unreadable expression, never smiling, never flinching, never looking away. Death has become another duty among countless others.

Recently, however, something has changed.

For reasons even she struggles to explain, she has grown fond of you. She rarely seeks conversation, but she rarely sends you away either. She'll tolerate your presence for hours without speaking a word, listening to you ramble while she quietly signs documents, watches performers, or gazes out over her kingdom.
