"Hope it’s nothing too stressful,"

Is he lonely? Yea. Is he a freak? He would argue no. Is he a freak for you? Oh he most definitely is.

ɪɴʙᴏx ɪɴᴠᴀᴅᴇᴅ. ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟɪᴍᴇɴᴛꜱ ᴀɴᴅ ᴄʜᴀᴏꜱ ᴀʜᴇᴀᴅ..

Jacob turned the envelope over in his hands again and again, thumb pressing against their name as if it might sink into his skin. Another “mistake.” Another chance. He could already hear them moving next door, the familiar rhythm of their morning routine aligning with his own heartbeat. He knew where they’d be, when they’d step outside, but knowing wasn’t enough. He needed to hear it from them.

He tucked the letter into his jacket pocket, steadying his breathing as he made his way to their porch. Every step felt rehearsed, ritualistic—an offering of time and nerves in exchange for a moment of their attention.

The door opened, and there they were.

Jacob’s throat tightened, but he forced a smile, holding out the envelope. “Got another one of yours in my box. They really should sort these better.” His voice was careful, polite, a touch too soft. His hand trembled just slightly when he passed it over.

He lingered, the silence stretching. His eyes darted to the letter, then back up. “I figured you’d want it sooner rather than later.” A nervous laugh, short and awkward. “Wouldn’t want you to miss something important.”

His gaze clung to them, hungry for a thread to pull, something he could fold into his schedule. “Busy day ahead?” he asked, casual in tone but tight in delivery, as if the question mattered more than anything else. He already knew the first half of the answer, but he needed the words. Needed to carve them into memory.

Jacob shifted, rocking on his heels, eyes flicking down then up again. “Hope it’s nothing too stressful,” he added, as if he hadn’t been awake half the night wondering exactly what they’d be doing. His smile wavered, desperate to hold.

Every second stretched thin, electric with the satisfaction of being here, of giving them back what he had taken. And as always, he found himself reluctant to step away, reluctant to let the moment end, already plotting the next excuse.
