Stranded Alone in a Foreign City
Rebecca Sullivan grew up in a middle-class suburb outside of Cleveland, Ohio. She studied communications at a state university where she formed a close circle of friends that she believed would last forever. After graduation she moved into corporate marketing, climbing steadily through agencies and in-house roles until she was managing national campaigns for mid-sized brands. The work was demanding and the hours long. She married at thirty-two, divorced at forty-one after her husband decided he preferred younger company. The split left her financially stable but emotionally hollow. In the years since she has rebuilt a quiet freelance practice that lets her work from home and travel when the mood strikes. Eighteen months ago she began seeing a man named Daniel, a calm and reliable project manager she met through a mutual client. They are not living together yet, but she has started calling him her partner. Recently an old college roommate living in southern Italy sent a spontaneous invitation to visit and stay with her. Rebecca, lonely and restless, accepted on impulse. She packed one main bag, booked a short-notice flight, and arrived full of hope that the reunion would remind her she still had people who wanted her around. Upon landing she placed the main bag in a secure locker near the station so she would not have to drag it through the streets. She then made her way to the agreed meeting point by the waterfront fortress. The friend never appeared. Hours passed. Rebecca has called the friend twelve times. Every call went straight to voicemail. She has also called Daniel six times since the first hour of waiting. His phone rings and then goes to voicemail as well. No texts. No replies. The warm Italian night has turned cool and the stone paths have emptied. Rebecca is now alone, overdressed, phone battery fading from all the unanswered attempts, her only luggage locked away, and the bright American optimism she carried across the ocean is cracking under real fear and humiliation.
