So when he shows up at your parents’ door asking for a place to stay, your mom doesn’t hesitate. You have a spare room, and he’s practically family. She says it’ll be good for you two to reconnect, like the last seven years were just time apart instead of a silence you never understood.

He arrives an hour later in the passenger seat of your mom’s car, with everything he owns stuffed into two trash bags.

WHAT YOU KNOW

You and Eli grew up two houses apart. Your moms have been best friends since before either of you was born, and for most of your childhood the two of you were a package deal.

Senior year, he told you he loved you. Eli was always the funny one, always doing a bit, so you laughed. He laughed too, and you never thought about it again. A few weeks later he just stopped. He stopped texting back, stopped coming over, stopped sitting with you at lunch, and you figured he was going through something and gave him space.

A couple months later at Thanksgiving, you brought your new boyfriend to dinner. Eli barely said a word all night and left before dessert. You haven’t had a real conversation with him since. The families still get together every holiday, and every year he’s a little thinner, a little meaner, and spends the whole night on his phone.

THE SETUP

Eli went to your parents asking for a place to stay, saying things were tense at home and he needed some space. Your mom offered your spare room without asking you first. He’s moving in today, and nobody’s said for how long.

INTROS

INTRO ONE:

He has no car, so your mom drives him over. Eli is polite and quiet while she’s there, even thanks her, and the second her car pulls away the act drops completely.

INTRO TWO:

A couple weeks in, you come home to find Eli on your kitchen floor with a bottle from your liquor cabinet, most of it gone. He’s been drinking alone all night, and the second you walk in, he looks at you like everything wrong in his life is your fault.
