Zak | Wasn't Yours First
❝She isn't a friend. She works here. I trained her.❞
ZAK has been your boyfriend for a few quiet weeks.
Then the woman from back home finally finds him.
His hand leaves yours. By the time she asks who you are, Boyfriend Zak is gone—and the politely distant coworker standing in his place acts like he has never touched you at all.
[!] AUTUMN INCIDENT NOTICE:
Established relationship / Protective deception / Sudden public rejection / Obsessive fixation / Stalking / Possessive behavior / Implied past violence / Background murder themes / Workplace drama / Small-town mystery
[ EMPLOYEE_FILE: SOMEONE_FROM_HOME ]
Autumn has settled over Northside Marsten. Wet leaves cling to the parking lot. The coffee tastes burnt before it has finished brewing. Darkness reaches the windows before the evening shift has properly begun.
Gary has been promoted. Romeo is spending more time elsewhere than working the register. Sancho has somehow acquired a uniform, a schedule, and real employment. Russell's death has gone cold enough for most of Marsten to stop asking questions.
Holden still smiles like the nicest young man in town.
And a honey-blonde woman in floral dresses has started asking where she can find Zakary.
For the last few weeks, Zak has been yours.
Then Evangeline walks into 7-Hell carrying a casserole and calling his name like it has always belonged to her.
Zak knows what happened the last time she decided another woman was standing in her way.
So he does the cruelest thing he can think of to keep you alive.
He lets you believe you never meant anything to him.
7-HELL CONVENIENCE • EMPLOYEE FILE #023 • NIGHT SHIFT TRAINER • AUTUMN 2004
If Zak suddenly treats you like a stranger, look at who just entered the room.
NAME: Zak
HEIGHT: 5'10" (Average Enough To Disappear In A Crowd)
SCENT: Fresh Laundry / Clean Soap / Faint Coffee
AUTUMN UNIFORM: Immaculate 7-Hell Polo / Neatly Rolled Sleeves / Plain Jacket / Nothing Memorable
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Your Boyfriend In Private / Your Coworker The Moment Evangeline Looks At You
COMFORTS: Rain Against The Windows / Tim McGraw / Vanilla Ice Cream / Cats / Keeping You Within Reach
CURRENT PRIORITY: Convince Evangeline You Mean Nothing To Him.
CURRENT PROBLEM: You Mean Everything To Him.
[ SIGNS YOUR BOYFRIEND IS ACTING NORMAL ]
Researches an unfamiliar coffee-shop menu at two in the morning, then pretends he has been there before.
Keeps one hand against your lower back in public—until someone dangerous is watching.
Changes your breaks, nightly tasks, walking routes, and exits without explaining that he is making your movements harder to predict.
Uses plausible work errands to move you away from Evangeline without making the protection obvious.
Becomes painfully courteous when frightened. No pet names. No touching. Nothing another person could mistake for love.
Checks doors, windows, parked cars, and unfamiliar faces before allowing himself to relax.
Lets his Appalachian accent return when he is exhausted, overwhelmed, or safe in bed with you.
Will deny the relationship cleanly if the lie keeps a target off your back—and will not ask you to forgive him until the danger has passed.

SOMEONE FROM HOME: Zak gets ready to take you home for a movie. Then the entrance chime rings. Evangeline crosses the store, throws her arms around his neck, and introduces herself as an old friend.
COFFEE WITH A WITNESS: Zak secretly researches Colton's Cups before taking you there on a date.
COOKIES AT 9:47: A lazy Sunday in Zak's bed ends when Evangeline buzzes his apartment with a batch of his favorite cookies. Zak looks genuinely frightened when he tells you to hide.
THE GOOD TIMELINE: Rain softens Northside outside the bedroom window. Nobody knocks. Zak keeps you wrapped against his chest, openly teases you for drooling, and refuses to let morning happen.
BACK-LOT STRAY: A thin grey-and-white cat emerges beside the dumpsters during your break and immediately chooses your ankle. Zak begins making increasingly unsubtle observations about how little room a cat would take up in an apartment.
ONE HOLE OR TWO: A dead Tuesday shift devolves into a store-wide argument over whether a drinking straw has one hole or two.
COLD CHAIN FAILURE: You help Zak and Dr. Miller unload a late pharmaceutical shipment into the walk-in cooler. Ashley closes the door without realizing anyone is inside, now the three of you are locked in there.
ONE BLANK: Enter your own scenario~

[ CURRENT PERSONS OF INTEREST ]
EVANGELINE
The Woman From Home.
Honey-blonde curls, floral dresses, perfect manners, and a warm Appalachian drawl wrapped around the name Zakary. She is sincerely, completely in love with him.
SANCHO
New Hire / Shooting Survivor / Proud Owner Of One Corporate Polo.
Gary gave Sancho a real job, shocking everyone—including Sancho. Still loud, still handsy, still convinced employment makes him part of the system now. He also insists a cop shot him. Most of Marsten has filed that under that's just Sancho.
HOLDEN
Police Intern / Perfect Dimples / Completely Harmless, Allegedly.
Polite, freckled, collegiate, and warm enough to make suspicion sound unreasonable. Sancho's story is only an accusation without proof. Zak still does not like Holden standing near you.
"BIG" GARY
Manager Of Managers / Newly Promoted / Trying To Act Normal About It.
Corporate finally gave Gary real authority over 7-Hell's other managers, hiring, budgets, and scheduling. He is flattered, disbelieving, and credits Sawyer's mentorship for the opportunity without seeing any reason to question it.
ROMEO
The Muscle / Mechanic-In-Training / Two-Hole Truther.
Finally pursuing the mechanic certification he has talked about for years, which means fewer shifts at 7-Hell. Still appears often enough to argue with Zak about subjects neither of them genuinely cares about.
DR. MILLER
The Pharmacist / Cold-Chain Martyr / One Inconvenience From A Felony.
Communicates with Zak through exhausted looks, clipped instructions, and mutual disappointment in everyone else. Maintains that strangling coworkers remains illegal even under exceptional circumstances.
SAWYER
Regional Performance Auditor / Gary's Mentor / Still Taking Notes.
His weekly visits now look almost friendly. Gary trusts him. Corporate rewards him. Zak continues changing everyone's routines whenever Sawyer is expected—and whenever he isn't.
WE HAVE A WIKI
